Sometimes, watching Pretty Little Liars can feel like an exercise in masochism as tragedy after tragedy befalls the Liars and their loved ones. These girls have to deal with emotional terrorism, bullying, and murder. But not all character storylines are created equally. Which Liars is having the best Season 4? And which is having the worst?

4. Spencer Hastings

Compared to Season 3, Spencer’s Season 4 experience has been puppies and rainbows! Sure, she’s had some angst involving the “A” game and Toby’s quest to find out the truth for his mother, but she hasn’t had any mental breakdowns, so we’d say she’s ahead of the game. It seems like things are going to get tougher for Spence in the upcoming half-season a possible drug problem, a big secret set to come out, and the long-term absence of Toby but, so far, Spencer’s doing OK. She hasn’t tackled Mona once. Yet.

3. Aria Montgomery

Check back with us after Season 4B, and Aria might be at the top of this list, but right now she’s enjoying a relative lull in “A”-related drama. Sure, she’s had to deal with the usual shenanigans (i.e. bees in her mother’s car), but there hasn’t been anything too terrible. Not to mention Aria has really taken control of her life. She decided the Ezria relationship was too much and started dating Jake, the local hottie karate instructor. We don’t think it’s going to last, but at least she got some good self defense training out of the deal. We figure she might need it heading into Season 4B, when the other shoe is set to drop on the “Ezra is ‘A’” reveal. Enjoy the calm before the storm, Aria!

2. Emily Fields

Poor, Em! She’s been a consistent “A” target since the beginning, and the trouble hasn’t let up much in Season 4. It started when Emily injured her shoulder when saving Aria and Mona from “A”’s attack-by-car. What might have been an inconvenience for someone else, has seemingly cost the serious swimmer the future she’s dreamt of: an athletics scholarship to Stanford where she could live with girlfriend, Paige. To make matters worse, Emily is also currently homeless as “A” drove a car into Emily’s house, almost hitting her mother. Yeah, Em never catches a break.

1. Hanna Marin

Let’s face it: Hanna’s life has blown this season and it doesn’t look like it’s about to get any better. Most of the season has been spent struggling to come to terms with her mother’s arrest for Detective Wilden’s murder. Hanna’s mother has sacrificed so much for her daughter, always putting Hanna first when her somewhat absentee father started a new life without her. Hanna would have rather confessed to the murder herself (which she almost did), then let the person she depends on most rot in jail. Now that Ashley Marin has been cleared of all charges, it may seem like things are looking up for our spunky little Liar... But that isn’t necessarily the case. The other constant in Hanna’s life, boyfriend Caleb, is now pretty committed to life in Ravenswood. Best case scenario: we’re looking at a long-distance relationship. Worst case: a break-up. We don’t like those options.

Which Liar do you think is having the worst season? And who will have it the worst in Season 4B? Sound off in the comments below!
