The Canadians have just released the promo for Season 4, Episode 16 (“Close Encounters”) of Pretty Little Liars and there’s a lot of frustration happening in the 30-second vid. What hints about next week’s episode can we glean from the tense trailer?

The promo begins with Shana telling Emily she has a message for her from Alison. We know from the synopsis that Ali wants Em to meet up with her alone. Later in the vid, we see that the meeting actually takes place when Emily asks Alison to confide in her the identity of her pursuer. “I thought I know, but I was wrong,” says a distraught Alison.

Elsewhere in the episode, the Liars discuss Ali in a darkened room. (Could this be the Busy Bee Inn they’re racing to at the end of this week’s episode?) The door creaks shut to reveal a message from “A”: “You’re too late.” Creeeepy.

“If Ali was here, where did she go?” asks Hanna.

“Maybe she fought ‘A’ off and got away,” suggests Emily.

Spencer is more cynical: “Yeah, or he took her somewhere else.”

“Or worse,” Aria adds. When did she become the Debbie Downer of the group? Perhaps it happened when Jake tried to express his concerns about Ezra to her. Elsewhere in the promo, we see Aria somewhat angrily tell Jake: “The Ezra that I know, he doesn’t have a mean bone in his body.” Cue shot of Ezra freaking out as a car drives away from him. Will Aria wise up to Ezra’s dark side, or will she jump to his defense when Jake confronts her with real evidence of Ezra’s anger? Judging by the shot of Jake taking out his frustration on a martial arts dummy, we’re leaning towards the latter.

Meanwhile, Spencer is up to her sleuthing ways. Mr. Hastings comes down the stairs of his house to find Spencer rifling through some papers in the darkened living room. “What the hell are you doing?” he asks her. Are the papers Spencer is going through from a case he is working on? Or, perhaps, they are more personal papers? Whatever they are, Mr. Hastings is definitely hiding something and we bet it has something to do with Radley.
