We love all of Pretty Little Liars’ constant thrills and surprises, but at the end of every episode, it always seems as though we have more questions than answers — and that was especially true this week.
To that end, we’ve tackled the biggest questions from this week’s episode in order to figure out what’s really going on in Rosewood, and to pick up on any and all clues.
Here are 10 questions from Season 4, Episode 16: “Close Encounters.”
1. Did Ezra plant those knives in Jake’s punching bag?
The knives were out (literally) this week as someone filled Jake’s punching bag with something other than cotton balls. So is Ezra the one who put the knives in there, once he found out that Jake squealed on him to Aria about his little outburst? We certainly hope Ezra didn’t put the knives in there, since it would be pretty darn demented, but we are suspicious.
2. Is Mrs. DiLaurentis on the Radley board to hide the fact that Ali killed Toby’s mom?
It turns out that snooping around in people’s briefcases can really pay off, as Spencer discovers that Alison’s mom is on the Radley board. Does this mean Mrs. D is trying to hide the fact that Ali or her twin pushed Toby’s mom off the roof? Or maybe the suddenly in-rehab Jason had something to do with it?
3. Why doesn’t Ali trust Spencer or Aria?
Ali makes some rather surprising comments this week, like when she tells Emily that she’s not sure if she can trust Spencer and Aria. Does Ali have a genuine reason to not trust those two girls — meaning they might be working with the “A” team? Or is Ali just trying to play mind games with our Liars and break their group apart?
4. Was Spencer right to interfere with Emily and Alison’s meeting?
There’s a big Team Spencer vs. Team Emily spat brewing on PLL, and now it’s time to take sides. We understand both girls’ feelings, but we definitely get that Spencer wanted to protect Emily. So how soon will this issue get resolved between these two? And more importantly, how soon will Emily and Ali, y’know, get it on? C’mon, Emison seems like it’s about to happen.
5. Can we trust Ezra’s story about Maggie’s lawyer?
Aria had no trouble buying Ezra’s explanation about how he was meeting with Maggie’s lawyer in order to see Malcolm more frequently. But do we buy it? It seems fishy, so we’re inclined to think that the woman in the car was actually someone else. After all, the way Ezra was yelling “This isn’t over!” at the car seemed a little too intense for just not getting to see Malcolm.
6. What is Shana up to?
We’ve always had trouble trusting Shana, especially since we had a feeling she might have had something to do with the fire in the Season 3 finale. But now she claims to be close pals with Ali and that she was just buddying up to Jenna in order to get info from her. That said, the fact that Shana speeds away in her car so quickly after dropping Em off to meet Ali is weird.
7. Does Shana’s photo getting burned mean that Jenna is “A”?
Speaking of the Season 3 finale fire, we see Shana’s childhood photo get set on fire at the episode of this week’s episode. Maybe someone involved in that fire is the one setting Shana’s photo ablaze? We’re specifically wondering if Jenna might be the one burning Shana’s likeness, since she could be feeling betrayed by her.
8. Will Toby decide to learn more about his mom’s death?
Finally, we’re getting somewhere with the storyline involving Toby’s mom — and then Toby goes and decides he’s had enough. Don’t leave us hanging now, bro! We hope he works with Spencer to find out what Spencer’s dad and Alison’s mom are really hiding. Plus, we’re worried about the current Spoby tension, since we can’t stand the thought of another breakup.
9. Will romance continue to blossom between Hanna and Travis?
It’s not easy to see Hanna move on so quickly from Caleb, is it? And Hanna telling Caleb how much she enjoyed the past year was one of the highlights of the episode. But there’s no denying that Travis is a looker and seems sweet, so maybe he’ll be good for Hanna. We just hope he’s not up to no good, given his sudden arrival at the cabin last week and the cut on his hand.
10. Perhaps it was Aria who hid those knives?
Okay, so the questions at the end of this list each week can occasionally get a tad wacky. So bear with us here, but is it possible that Aria put the knives in the punching bag? After all, she was the one asking Jake all about his punching bag and knew that he would use it to train for his big tournament coming up. Maybe Aria is more protective of Ezra than we realized?
