Every one of the core four on Pretty Little Liars has seriously upped their detective game over the course of four seasons of “A” hunting, but perhaps no Liar deserves the trophy for Most Improved Detective as much as Hanna Marin (Ashley Benson). In Season 4, she has gone above and beyond to find the truth. Here are five reasons why Detective Hanna is the best.
She’s Not Afraid to Confront Her Enemies
Give it enough time, and every one of the Liars will eventually confront their enemies, frenemies, and potential informants to discover the truth — but, for Hanna, it’s usually her first instinct. Sure, sometimes that puts her in danger, but often times, it also gets answers. And it makes for awfully entertaining television. One of our favorite PLL moments remains the scene in which Hanna jumps in front of Jenna’s car to prove that she can most definitely see. Yeah, this girl gets results.
She Leads With Her Heart
Though some may turn their nose up at the idea of the heart proving useful over cold-hearted reason in the pursuit of the truth, we respectfully disagree. Hanna is at her best when someone she loves is in danger. Why do you think she improved so much as a detective over the past season? Because her mother was in danger of getting convicted of murder. Hanna funneled the love she has for her mother and the fear she had over possibly never seeing her again into a dogged pursuit of the truth. And it totally worked.
Spencer’s a planner and, most of the time, that totally works in her favor. But, sometimes, it’s important to act and think about your actions a little bit later — which is where Hanna comes in. When the Liars found “A”’s lair in the summer finale, Hanna didn’t stop to ask question, she just went for a piece of evidence (the journal) with plans to dissect it later. Which means, while the other Liars were busy trying to work things out, Hanna managed to grab the very artifact that would lead the investigation forward.
She Understands the Power of Transformation
The villains in Rosewood tend to be masters of disguise. Everyone and their mother seems to have an alter ego, black veil, or non-descript sweatshirt to keep their identity a secret. Luckily, Hanna understand the powers and tools of transformation because she used them to make one of her own. In the time between Ali’s disappearance and the discovery of her “body,” Hanna went from an awkward, overweight “loser” to the It Girl of Rosewood High. Who better to understand the signs of transformation than her?
Others Underestimate Her
Hanna might not be as academically-aware as the other Liars, but that doesn’t mean she isn’t smart. People don’t always give her enough credit because of the way she looks and her apathy towards schoolwork. This is annoying, but it can also work in her favor when Hanna is trying to sneak her way into a dentist’s office or fly under the radar. Everyone sees Spencer coming — they know that she is on the hunt. But, with Hanna, the approach can be seemingly innocuous. No one suspects the busty blonde of cracking the case — which is their mistake.
