We’re guessing Ali’s return to Rosewood in Pretty Little Liars Season 5 may be lukewarm, but perhaps no one will be less excited to see the former mean girl than Paige (Lindsey Shaw). After all, Emily (Shay Mitchell) was once in love with Ali, and she is part of the reason Paily recently broke up. So, how does Paige react to Alison’s return? Pretty Little Liars writer Joseph Dougherty talked to Alloy Entertainment about the awkwardness.

“Would you take it well?” Joseph awesomely replied to the question of Paige’s response to Ali’s return. “I sort of inherited Emily and Paige and I feel like I’m shepherding them through their relationship. I think it comes down to this: one of the reasons Emily is not the same person that she was when Alison left is because of her relationship with Paige. But, none of these dynamics are the same anymore. I think Paige is threatened. She’s taken actions which in the writer’s room, I agree with, and everyone thinks that I’m cranking.”

Joseph is referring, of course, to Paige’s decision to betray Emily’s confidence and tell the police not only that Ali is still alive, but where they might find her. This is after Emily told her that doing so could endanger Ali’s life. When Emily found out about Paige’s actions, the two broke up. Though Em still seems to love Paige, she’s not sure if she’ll ever be able to trust her again.

Always a champion of Paily’s relationship, and Paige in general, Joseph revealed that he is the only writer in the writer’s room who thinks Paige did the right thing in dropping the Rosewood PD an anonymous note. Regardless, it sounds like we’re in for another ride on the Paily relationship rollercoaster come Season 5. In fact, Joseph called the Alison/Emily/Paige dynamic in Season 5 “arguably … the most interesting triangle of the season.”
