Pretty Little Liars has an unfortunate habit of killing people off in “important” episodes. In the Season 4 premiere, it was Detective Wilden who got the boot. Will someone die in the Season 5 premiere?

“A” was very busy in the Season 4 finale. He or she was presumably behind the death of Mrs. DiLaurentis and shot Ezra while he was protecting the Liars on a NYC rooftop. No one can accuse the mysterious villain of being unproductive. These facts might be enough to spare another casualty in the Season 4 premiere. Maybe. Let’s face it: Pretty Little Liars is upping the ante in Season 5. Alison will be back in town and the 100th episode is right around the corner. They’re not pulling any punches when it comes to raising the stakes for PLL’s fifth season.

And don’t think it hasn’t escaped our notice that the Season 5 premiere is heavy on the supporting characters. Mona (Janel Parrish), Noel Kahn (Brant Daugherty), and Lucas (Lucas Gottesman) are all in Season 5, Episode 1. That’s a lot of recurring cast muscle to bring back for one episode. Almost too much. The show should probably get rid of one of them — in the style of an untimely death.

Obviously, Mona should never be sacrificed because she is the reliable snark that this show secretly runs on. But we’d say Noel and Lucas are up for grim reaper grabs. Noel has been helping Alison, which makes him a mega-target. He was also at the scene of Ezra’s not long before “A” showed up to cross the rooftop shooting off of his or her agenda. Did “A” take Noel out before going after Ali and the Liars?

Lucas is also a likely victim. Not only has he been M.I.A. for ages, but he left Rosewood High because he feared for his life. It stands to follow that his return in the Season 5 premiere could spell his downfall. There’s also the fact that he has always seemed to know more about the “A” game than he has ever let on. He has acted as a pawn for the “A” Team — according to him, unwillingly — and could be seen as just another loose end. Will “A” “tie” that loose end in the Season 5 premiere?

Then again, from the sounds of the Season 5 premiere title (“EscApe From New York”), it doesn’t sound like the episode will be overly concerned with the goings-on in Rosewood. If the focus of the episode stays on Ali and the Liars’ return from the rooftop from whence they fled, then the residents of Rosewood might all live to see another episode. You know, except Mrs. DiLaurentis. She seems pretty dead.
