“HBD Marlene King! Love -your kids,” Keegan Allen (Toby) captioned an Instagram photo of much of the cast gathered on set. In the photo with their arms around one another: Ashley Benson (Hanna), Tyler Blackburn (Caleb), Ian Harding (Ezra), Shay Mitchell (Emily), Troian Bellisario (Spencer), Sasha Pieterse (Ali), and Lucy Hale (Aria). And to think: Marlene was the one who brought all of these people together!
There are many reasons to be happy Marlene was born. Not only is she responsible for one of our favorite shows — PLL, of course! — but she also penned the script for 90s cult classic Now and Then (also about four girls growing up in small town America). If you haven’t seen it, do yourself a favor, and go check it out. If not for the enjoyment of watching the film itself, then to see the Pretty Little Liars connections.
We will soon have another exciting piece of Marlene’s work. She just announced that she will be writing and directing the feature film adaptation of Danielle Vega’s horror novel The Merciless. Marlene tweeted last Tuesday: “It's official-I'm teaming up with @lionsgatemovies @alloyent to write the feature #TheMerciless. I promise it'll scare the DEVIL out of you.” Here’s to another Marlene project we all can love!
