The Pretty Little Liars Season 4 finale (Season 4, Episode 24, "A Is for Answers") was a game changer. When we left off, Ezra Fitz (Ian Harding) was in critical condition, Mrs. DiLaurentis was dead, and Alison DiLaurentis (Sasha Pieterse) was finally spilling her secrets. The Season 5 premiere (Season 5, Episode 1, "EscApe From New York") had a lot to live up to.

The episode opened strong, with "A" following Ezra to the hospital, the Liars and Ali hatching a plot to help him, Holbrook letting the Hastings know CeCe has escaped, and Mona learning that Ali is alive, only to tell someone, "This changes everything."

The middle of the episode dragged a little, with a lot of focus being put on suspense scenes with various "A" type figures stalking the Liars around. These scenes were well done, as always, but mostly felt like a retread of stuff we'd seen before.

That said, things picked up in the second half of the episode. We had Mona trying to form a band of misfits who hate Ali (can't wait to see where that goes), some lovely bonding moments between the Liars as they reflected on what they'd do with themselves if they really did get rid of "A", some interesting scenes with CeCe (according to Ali, CeCe has been on her side the whole time, and we saw how close they are this week), and, of course, the epic final confrontation with Shana.

Overall, we liked this episode. It was a good mix of chills, plot, and well-done character moments. Clearly, having Ali back in the mix is going to change things up, big time, and we're excited to see what happens next. We give it a solid 4 stars.
