If you think your love life is confusing, take a look at Emily Fields (Shay Mitchell). The Pretty Little Liars heroine ended Season 4 torn between first love Alison DiLaurentis (Sasha Pieterse) and current love Paige McCullers (Lindsey Shaw). As much as we love the Emison dynamic, we can’t help but feel a pull to the Paily relationship that has blossomed over the last few seasons. Sorry Emison, but here are the reasons why Emily and Paige need to work it out in Season 5.

Emily is not the same person she was when she loved Ali. Though Emily once loved Alison more than anyone else, that naive, timid, confused version of Emily no longer exists. Em has been through so much since Ali faked her death and disappeared into the night. She has lost another love, she has killed to protect herself, and she has embraced her sexuality. Emily has matured into a generous, independent, and loving woman — a woman who loves Paige. She’s not going to be able to turn those feelings off just because of Paige’s betrayal.

Paige’s mistake came from a place of love. We totally think that Paige made a mistake in betraying Emily’s trust and express wishes, but we think it came out of a place of love and, for that, we think Paige deserves another chance, especially if the show is willing to give Ezra another one for a much more grievous betrayal. Paige has continuously been there for Emily in the past few years, and we don’t think one mistake should completely erase all that has come before. (Let’s not mention that time Paige tried to drown Emily, deal?)

These two have a history of working through their problems. One of the things we like about Paily is that they are good communicators and they don’t easily give up. Their relationship is mature in the sense that, rather than ignoring an issue between the two of them, they confront it (mostly) and try to work through it. We need more examples of this in TV coupledom, and we’d like to see Paily continue their habit, even if they eventually meet an issue they can’t work through. It’s the trying that counts.

Emily deserves more than mushy squash. Near the end of last season, Emily told Paige that she didn’t want to be the person who ends up with mushy squash — she wants to be with the person she wants to be with rather than settling for someone else. Right now, Paige might not be that person, given that Emily kinda, maybe broke up with her at the end of Season 4, but we think Paige may still be Em’s perfectly ripe squash again sometime soon.

Do you think Paige and Emily should work things out in Season 5? Why or why not? Sound off in the comments below!
