The Pretty Little Liars Season 5 premiere introduced a bunch of new catalysts to the Pretty Little Liars universe. Our favorite may just be Mona’s Army, the group of Ali-haters Mona gathered together in preparation for Ali’s return to Rosewood. Is Mona’s Army the “A” Team? Showrunner Marlene King weighs in.

Marlene confirmed with Entertainment Weekly that the group of people gathered by Mona in the season opener — including Melissa, Paige, and Lucas — is Mona’s Army, but are they also the “A” Team?

“Everything is always up for debate amongst the fans, and we like that healthy debate, but Mona appears to be very out in the open with her feelings toward Alison and the return,” Marlene teased. “This is a clandestine meeting of Mona’s Army as she rallies the troops, but very early on when Ali comes back, she sort of states her case, which is like, ‘I’m not ‘A.’ I don’t need to be ‘A’ anymore. I’m not hiding. I’m going to tell you face-to-face what I think of you.’”

Though Marlene is not stating it definitively, it sounds to us like Mona’s Army is not the “A” Team. That being said, we can’t be sure if there are members of Mona’s Army who aren’t also on the “A” Team. And, though this gang might not be the “A” Team, that doesn’t mean they’re not going to cause Ali (and potentially the Liars?) a lot of misery over the next season. Marlene wouldn’t say what Mona’s Army’s specific mission is, but she did say: “It will play out over the summer. You’ll find out what the intention was and what their goal is.” Watch out, Ali. Mona is coming for you.
