On the most recent episode of Pretty Little Liars, Mrs. Hastings left her husband not because she believes he murdered Mrs. DiLaurentis (murder is, apparently, not a reason for separation in the Hastings household), but because she believes Mr. Hastings had Melissa help in the dastardly deed. But is that really what happened? We speculate below.
Yes, Melissa helped her father murder Mrs. DiLaurentis. Things are not looking promising for one-half of the Hastings family. Spencer found the same drug that was used to kill Mrs. DiLaurentis prescribed to her father in their medicine cabinet. Mr. Hastings also had motive to kill Mrs. D.: she threatened to frame Spencer for murder. Yikes! Alternatively, the duo could have committed the murder to keep Melissa safe. In the Season 4 finale, Melissa implied that she knew who killed the girl in Ali’s grave, and that it wasn’t Spencer, making us wonder if it wasn’t Melissa herself. If this were the case, then perhaps Melissa and her father killed Mrs. D. to keep her from exposing Melissa for the murder she did commit. Lots of options, none of them good news for the Hastings family.
No, Melissa did it herself. Are we positive that Mr. Hastings was even involved in Mrs. D.’s murder? While we believe Melissa is capable of murder — and potentially has killed before to protect Spencer — we’re not so sure about her dear old dad. Sure, he’s a determined guy, but he also once had an affair with Mrs. DiLaurentis and shares a son, Jason, with her. That’s gotta make killing Mrs. D. a heck of a lot harder. Melissa, on the other hand, has no such affection for the DiLaurentises. In fact, she seems to loathe them. Maybe Mrs. Hastings is looking at this in completely the wrong way. Maybe it was Melissa who pulled her father into the murder business.
No, they’re hiding something else. Pretty Little Liars really wants us to believe that Melissa and Mr. Hastings up and murdered their next door neighbor, which is exactly why we’re hesitant to. PLL tends to prefer its reveals come out of nowhere, and this would be the complete opposite. However, even if Mr. Hastings and Melissa didn’t murder Mrs. DiLaurentis, they’re definitely up to something. Could they be protecting whomever did? After all, they are lying about their whereabouts when Mrs. DiLaurentis’ murder was going down, and she did end up buried in their backyard. And, judging by their shady behavior after the incident, they are definitely up to something.
