The moment is almost here, Pretty Little Liars fans! Soon, we will meet the mother of the devious Mona Vanderwaal (Janel Parrish), and we’re not quite sure what to expect. We do have one more piece to the puzzle, however, in the casting of the role. Who is the actress we will soon know as Mona’s mother? Read on to find out!

According to Deadline, Sydney Penny has been cast as Mona’s mom, Leona Vanderwaal, for Season 5, Episode 12 of Pretty Little Liars. Sydney is a soap opera veteran perhaps best known for her role as Julia Santos on All My Children, and we can’t wait for her to bring this role to life. Mona is one of the most intriguing characters on PLL, and we’re desperate to learn more about her backstory. How did she evolve from frustrated nerd to archvillain? Perhaps her mother can fill in some of the blanks.

We’re also particularly intrigued by the knowledge that Leona will be appearing in Episode 12 of the season, traditionally the summer finale. This episode tends to drop some major truth bombs and end with a major cliffhanger. Given that Mona’s mother will play a role in the episode, we wonder if Mona will play a large part in the midseason finale. Actually, we’re kind of worried something may happen to dear old Mona. Sure, she may be a criminal mastermind, but that doesn’t mean we want her off the show. Keep that in mind, TV gods.

Are you as excited to meet Mona’s mother as we are? What do you think she’ll be like? And what might this mean for Mona? Sound off in the comments below!
