Detective Tanner (Roma Maffia) seems to be putting the pieces together in her investigation on Pretty Little Liars. Or she at least knows that there is something fishy about the Liars’ story, which is all it may take to unravel the web of lies the girls have spun since Ali’s return — or, arguably, since the pilot. In this sneak peek into Season 5, Episode 9 (“March of Crimes”), Tanner interrogates Aria (Lucy Hale) about her relationship with Ezra. Yikes!

“When did you first meet Mr. Fitz?” Tanner asks Aria, as Ella (Holly Marie Combs) sits with her daughter. Aria lies, telling her it was the first day of school junior year when really they met at a bar beforehand. When Tanner brings up their “intimate relationship … after he was no longer a teacher at this school,” Ella jumps in.

“I’m sorry. What does any of this have to do with the incident at the Marin house last night?” she asks. Oh, Ella. If only you know how much everything was connected in this town. The degrees of dramatic irony in this scene are a work of art.

Tanner tells Ella: “We have several open cases right now, and it’s helpful to explore possible connections … Mrs. Montgomery, if you would prefer to conclude this interview, that is your right to do so. I will ask a judge if he—” Ella interrupts her, allowing the interview to continue. She just wants to get this over with, but we have a feeling this is only the beginning of Tanner’s questions.
