On Pretty Little Liars Season 5, Episode 8 (“Scream For Me”) we learned for certain that Mrs. DiLaurentis and Bethany Young were connected long before Bethany turned up dead in Mrs. D's yard. But how?

We know Mrs. D used to visit Bethany, and take her on trips. Heck, she even bought the girl a horse! However, their relationship was not all smooth sailing — according to the guy at the stables, Bethany threw a bucket at Mrs. D's head when Mrs. D tried to get the girl to call her "Aunt Jessie."

We appreciate all these clues, but they don't paint a very clear picture. How are these two characters related? We have three main theories right now.

1. Bethany is Mrs. D's daughter — maybe even Ali's twin. If Bethany was Mrs. D's daughter — potentially even Ali's twin, though that is not required — that would explain the time and attention lavished on her. It might also explain why Bethany didn't want to call Mrs. D Aunt Jessie — if she was aware this woman was actually her mom, she could be hurt and outraged at the more distanced nickname.

2. Bethany is Mrs. D's actual niece. Another popular theory is that Mrs. D herself is the one with a (probably emotionally disturbed) twin. Maybe she really is Bethany's Aunt Jessie; it's possible that some sort of mental illness runs in the family.

3. Mrs. D was trying to bribe Bethany. It seems clear that Bethany knows something about what happened to Toby's mom, and that Mrs. D may have been involved in the cover-up. Perhaps Mrs. D only started caring about Bethany, who really was just a random patient, in the aftermath of that event, and was so nice to her to try to buy her silence. Based on her drawings, Bethany was confused and scared about what she'd seen, which might explain her outburst.
