The new love interest. So who is this new dude? According to E! Online, Spencer will be spending some time with painter Johnny Raymond, described as “cute, edgy, and charismatic.” This new character is said to first appear in Episode 15 of the season, and stick around for at least three episodes. At least. Given that Episode 15 is still quite a ways away, we think it is very possible that something could happen in that time to pull Spoby apart.
The additional seasons. There’s also the additional seasons to consider. Not-so-long ago, ABC Family announced that Pretty Little Liars had been renewed for two additional seasons after the fifth. It’s pretty much TV law that a couple can’t stay together for more than a season without some sort of obstacle coming along to tear them apart, so that the audience can enjoy another rotation of their “finding love” cycle. If PLL continues for another two seasons, you better believe that Spoby will be breaking up — the only question is: when?
The “A” factor. Did we say only question? There may be another important query we have related to our beloved Spoby: If this seemingly solid couple does break up, why? One of the ever-present stresses of the Liars’ lives is the worry that “A” will use their loved ones against them. Will this happen with Toby? “A” has already blown up his house. Might she go after Toby again, potentially even blackmailing Spencer to stay away from him?
High school graduation. If the “A” game doesn’t get these young Rosewood couples, then post-graduation life will! Last season, we watched as Paily dealt with the reality that — once college rolled around — they would be living on opposite ends of the country. Might the same reality hit Spoby? We’re not sure what either of their post-graduation plans will entail. Maybe it will work out? Either way, you better believe that such a major life change has the potential to break any couple apart.
Toby’s mother. Another possible obstacle between these two is the mystery of what happened to Toby’s mom. So far, the quest to discover the truth has, for the most part, brought these two closer together as Spencer supported Toby in his pursuit of the truth. Now that Toby’s mother’s death seems to be tied to the “A” game and whatever happened to Bethany Young, we’re not so sure Spencer will respect Toby’s wishes when it comes to not-questioning Radley’s official line. Will the truth about what really happened to Toby’s mom tear Spoby apart?
