Troian Bellisario (Spencer) is a confident, talented, and articulate woman, but she hasn’t always been so sure of herself. When she was younger, the Pretty Little Liars actress was embarrassed of her “low, too raspy” voice. That is, until her father introduced her to classic film actress Lauren Bacall.

In the wake of the screen legend's death on August 12, Troian took to Instagram to talk about how much Lauren Bacall and her career meant to her — and the masterminds behind Pretty Little Liars!

Troian posted a photo of Lauren Bacall looking sassy in her younger days, along with the caption: “When I was younger I was so embarrassed of my voice. I thought it was too low, too raspy and not lady like. Then when I was 16 my father showed me Lauren Bacall in ‘To Have and Have Not’ and he said ‘see baby, she's got a voice like yours and it was one of the things people loved about her, one day you will love having your voice too’. From the minute you saw her. You fell in love with her sly grin, her feline arching eyebrows and of course her deep warm voice. @badge714 even based Spencer in the noir episode after the film roles of Mrs.Bacall. She is and will remain a legend. An icon. And an inspiration. Thank you for teaching us all how to whistle.”

That last bit is a reference to Lauren Bacall's breakthrough performance in 1944's To Have and Have Not. In it, she delivers one of the most iconic lines in movie history. "You know how to whistle, don't you?" she asks her co-star — and future husband — Humphrey Bogart. "You just put your lips together and blow."

Troian has become a role model for so many young women, so it’s cool to see who has inspired her over the years. And we’re not surprised it was someone as classy, glamorous, and strong-minded as the late, great Lauren Bacall.
