Everything’s coming to a head in the Pretty Little Liars summer finale, and we’ll end the summer season with one of our beloved characters dead. But, as has been proven on this show before, death is not always the final word. Will Mona Vanderwaal (Janel Parrish) fake her death in the summer finale? We speculate below.

Yes, she’s masterminded it before. As we learned in the Season 4 finale, it wasn’t Alison who decided to fake her own death. It was Mona who gave the idea to Ali. This begs the larger question: was Mona the one who pulled the entire thing off? Did she find someone — Bethany Young — to put in Ali’s grave? Did she later fake the results when the body was discovered and identified as Alison DiLaurentis? Regardless of the level of Mona’s involvement in Ali’s faked death scheme, we think there’s a good possibility Mona will try it again in the summer finale. Mona’s actions this summer season have been the actions of a girl who fears for her life. She’s even spelled this out for the Liars — most recently to Aria in last week’s episode. Is Mona actually worried that Ali might try to off her? Will she fake her own death to get away from that fate?

No, Mona’s a fighter. Then again, Mona isn’t one to run away from a fight. Instead, she builds an army. She schemes and manipulates. She hacks into police officers’ phones for information. With all of the tools and brains at Mona’s disposal, we doubt she would fake her own death. There are too many other options for the former “A”. Especially given that we think Mona still cares about Hanna, aka her former best friend. We doubt Mona would leave Hanna in danger “A.” We’re in the camp that believes that, deep down, Mona wants to be a loyal friend.

No, she’s going to die for real. This is the scariest of options, but probably the most likely. The promos for the summer finale have teased that someone will die, and this promo implies that the person in question is someone Hanna in particular cares about. Is Mona the victim? Let’s look at the facts: she’s been afraid for her life. Uber “A” has tried to kill her before. And, from what we know about the summer finale, we think Mona will be joining forces with the Liars, which is always a dangerous choice for any character on this show. Being close to the Liars is being close to death. We don’t want to imagine a PLL without Mona, but this could be where she meets her end.

Do you think Mona will fake her death in the summer finale? Do you think she will die for real? Sound off in the comments below!
