The characters on Pretty Little Liars have a casual relationship with the truth. They blow it off. Avoid it whenever possible. And, when forced into a corner, all-out lie. Is this what Melissa Hastings (Torrey DeVitto) did when she confessed to Spencer via video that she accidentally buried Bethany Young alive? Was Melissa telling the truth? We speculate below!

Yes, She Really Did Kill Bethany

We’ve seen Melissa lie before, and she isn’t usually so emotional. Watching her break down to Spencer on this video was heartbreaking. We believe her motivation that she thought she was protecting her little sister. We also believe Melissa’s fear before she fled town. Why would she go to such lengths to stay out of Rosewood if she wasn’t worried that there would be serious repercussions for her crime? We think there’s a good chance Melissa was telling the truth.

No, She's Still Covering for Someone

On the other hand, why would Melissa record a confession that could be used as evidence down the road? She’s a smart woman with two lawyers for parents, and this isn’t the smart move even if she wanted to spare herself having the conversation in person. It’s more likely that she recorded the confession because she wants the authorities to believe wholeheartedly that she was the one responsible for Bethany Young’s death. She knew that straight-up confessing wouldn’t be as convincing as recording a confession to Spencer that would “inadvertently” fall into the cops’ hands. Something doesn’t add up with Melissa’s story. We think there’s more to this crime than meets the eye.

No, But She Thinks She Is

The night Ali disappeared and Bethany Young was killed was a very confusing night. Seemingly every Rosewood resident was wandering around town and capable of murder. Melissa may believe she killed Bethany, but is that really the truth? For example, we know from "Ali” that she was buried alive by her mother and someone else, only to escape with the help of Mrs. Grunwald. Is it is possible that Bethany is Ali’s twin, and that the Ali we now know is Bethany? If this is the case, then Bethany escaped after Melissa buried her, and Melissa isn’t a murderer.

Do you think Melissa is telling the truth? Why or why not? Sound off in the comments below!
