In the last episode of Pretty Little Liars, Melissa Hastings (Torrey DeVitto) confessed to burying Bethany Young alive. This is the second instance we know of someone getting buried alive that night, as Alison (Sasha Pieterse) told the Liars that her mother and an unknown party buried her alive that night. Were both Bethany and Alison buried alive that night and, if so, is it possible Mrs. DiLaurentis (Andrea Parker) buried Bethany?

So, here’s the thing: We think it’s very possible Mrs. DiLaurentis buried Bethany, not Alison. Now, there are two separate ways this could have gone down, taking Melissa’s confession into account…

1. Ali is lying. As outlined by this clever Tumblr user and as visualized by this clever Tumblr user: After leaving Spencer, Alison happens upon Bethany, who hits Ali over the head using the shovel Spencer dropped. Melissa finds an unconscious Ali and, thinking Spencer killed her, buries her. Later, Mrs. Grunwald pulls Ali out of the premature grave, but Ali slips away before Mrs. G. can admit her to the hospital. She goes back to her house where Bethany is still hanging. Realizing that it was Bethany who knocked her out, she returns the favor while Mrs. D. is watching from the window. In the Tumblr theory, you can see that, after Bethany falls, Ali’s foot is still visibly standing. Mrs. DiLaurentis helps Alison bury Bethany, all the while asking her daughter how she could do such a thing.

In this scenario, Ali would be lying to the Liars about what happened that night. She remembers not getting buried alive by her mother, but helping her mother bury a dead Bethany.

2. Melissa is lying. Another possible scenario is that Melissa is lying in her video confession, and that she was the person who helped Mrs. D. bury Bethany alive. In this theory, Mrs. Grunwald pulled Bethany from the grave and Bethany was the one who told the Liars the story of that night in the Season 4 finale. Furthermore, this would mean that Bethany is the one who has been hanging in Rosewood this season. As for the dead body, we think it could belong to Sara Harvey, the missing girl from a nearby town formerly presumed by the Liars to be in Ali’s grave. This means that the real Alison is still out there and possibly “A”, intent on punishing Bethany for stealing her life.
