Iconic, anonymous villain “A” is the driving force behind Pretty Little Liars’ narrative. Without the mysterious mean girl (or guy), the Liars would likely have less exciting, happier lives — and what could would that be for a suspense thriller TV show? That being said, PLL can’t afford to draw the mystery of Uber “A” out forever. Will “A” be revealed in tonight’s summer finale? We speculate.

The show is due for an “A” reveal. The way we see it, Mona was revealed as “A” at the end of the second season. If PLL follows this pattern, then it is past due for another “A” reveal. We should have found out who the next Big "A" is in the Season 4 finale, lest we tire of all this mystery. With so many fake outs and questions, PLL has to be careful how long they draw out a mystery — even one as central as “A”’s identity.

How many “A”s can there be? Then again, we can only suspend disbelief so far when it comes to how many sociopathic teens terrorists live in this small, Pennsylvania town. Sure, we believe that Uber “A” could have been pulling the strings from the beginning. Or, that Mona as Original “A” could have a copycat, but we’d be less inclined to believe there’s a third “A”.

Two more seasons. PLL has been renewed for at least two more seasons, which puts this question in an interesting light. On the one hand, the show needs two more seasons of story to tell, so it might not make sense to give up its major plot device. On the other hand, introducing a new “A” — or even a different villain — could give the show new direction and fresh terror, something it is going to need if it hopes to sustain itself for another 63 episodes.

The episode title. The summer finale is called “Taking This One to the Grave,” a reference to a line in the credit song that two can only keep a secret when one of them is dead. This ominous title, as well as the murder scene we see in the promo, hints that someone in Rosewood has been murdered. “A” tends to do that when someone is getting too close to his or her identity. To us, this murder means there’s a good chance “A” will live to stalk anonymously for at least another half-season.

If Ali is “A”... If Alison is “A”, we think there’s a good chance PLL could reveal her identity in tonight’s episode. After all, the Liars already suspect their best frenemy of also being their worst nightmare. In this sneak peek, Emily straight-up asks Ali if she is “A”. Between Em’s interrogation and the Rosewood P.D. lie detector test we see Ali taking in this sneak peek, we could get to the bottom of this sooner rather than later.
