“There is a dark turn and it's a surprising turn," Marlene told The Hollywood Reporter. "I have goosebumps even telling you this — fans are going to be left speechless. I think it's one of those where, even people here who have seen the episode who work on the show, their jaws hit the floor. Tissue boxes were out; people were crying."
Of course, the decision to kill off this character didn’t happen overnight. "It's been a very well-thought plan," teased Marlene. Not to mention whoever does bite the dust in the Season 5 summer finale (“Taking This One to the Grave”) has been there since the very beginning.
The episode — which Marlene described as "thrilling, sad and shocking" — begins on Thanksgiving Day (at a crime scene, no less), before flashing back to 36 hours earlier.
“There is a real jump start to the episode,” Marlene told EW.com. “I don’t want to give away exactly what it is, but Ali makes a decision, Ali takes an action that appears to be a threatening, bold move toward the girls, the other PLLs and that is the shotgun that starts the show.”
Ali has clearly gone rogue, but would she really put the Liars in danger? It’s a possibility, especially now that the Liars are trying to find evidence to use against Ali. There’s zero trust between the Liars and their former bestie, and they’ve completely cut her off. And Marlene promises that the question that has been plaguing the Liars since the beginning — “why did she pick us?” — will finally be answered in this finale. But will it come with a reconciliation? We’ll have to wait and see.
Catch the Pretty Little Liars Season 5 summer finale on Tuesday, August 26 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC Family.
