Singer-songwriter Hayley Taylor has already been hailed by indie bible Pitchfork as "refreshingly unassuming" and by media titan Entertainment Weekly as "a rising star of the indie music scene." So having her song featured on Pretty Little Liars? Just another feather in her cap.
"It's been really exciting to be part of such a great show," Hayley told Wetpaint exclusively, "and to have my music featured on it alongside other artists I really admire. I think the show has a very creative premise and a terrific cast, and I'm excited to see what happens on the rest of the season." (Us too, Hayley!) Viewers heard Hayley's song, "What's Going On," in Season 1, Episode 11, "Moments Later," during the sequence where Mona and Hanna reconcile over a makeover in the hospital. "What's Going On" is an jangly slice of indie pop that provided a perfect soundtrack to that moment of girl-bonding.
But don't think that Hayley's just another pretty face in the already crowded market of indie popstrels: The prolific songwriter has a BA in Literature from New York's prestigious Vassar College, as well as an MFA in Art and time spent studying at La Sorbonne in Paris. She's also worked with the same producers who have helmed hits for artists like Ingrid Michaelson and Matt Nathanson, and her latest album, One Foot In Front of the Other, fits nicely alongside those stars; it's a record of sophisticated indie-pop, featuring charming lyrics and sweet vocals.
"Songwriting is a cathartic experience for me — it helps me express what often goes unspoken and allows me to process my feelings. It enables me to create something beautiful out of the joys and struggles of life, capturing in words and music the fleeting breakthroughs of clarity," Hayley explains of her process.
