Did Marlene King, Pretty Little Liars showrunner, accidentally reveal a huge spoiler by referring to “A” as “her” in a recent interview?
As we reported on January 8, Marlene said the following in an interview with The Insider (emphasis added): "[T]here's something else the girls are about to find that are about to lead them to her. There's also two parallel paths the girls take in 2B. There's the Hunt For A but they also find out something about Alison that they didn't know and they start retracing her steps from the Halloween episode to her death."
Is it just us, or did Marlene just cut our “A” suspect list in half? If so, let’s review the female suspects so far:
Melissa Hastings: With her access to the Hastings house, her jealousy of Alison over Ian Thomas (Ryan Merriman), and her mysterious absence from the winter premiere (Season 2, Episode 14: “Through Many Dangers, Toils, and Snares”), Melissa (Torrey DeVitto) is turning into a prime suspect. View our in-depth analysis of why Spencer’s (Troian Bellisario) older, traumatized sister might be “A” here.
Mona Vanderwall: Seeing as Mona’s (Janel Parrish) character in the original books turned out to be “A,” and we know that the show is following a very different blueprint, we’re both dismissive of this possibility and open to the idea of audience trickery — when we’re told who “isn’t” a suspect, shouldn’t we consider them a suspect even more? Read our analysis of why Mona could be “A” here.
Paige McCullers: We’ve heard from “A” via ABC Family spoilers that he/she “likes Paige better” than Maya (Bianca Lawson), and, considering how far “A” went to damage Emily’s (Shay Mitchell) relationship with Samara towards the end of Season 1, Paige and her Emily-obsessed narrative seems like a very likely candidate. Read more on why Paige might be “A” here.
Jenna Marshall: After seeing pretty definitive evidence that Jenna (Tammin Sursok) had something to do with Alison’s death (her creepy, borderline sexual connection with Garrett seems tied to their involvement with setting the Little Liars up to get busted with the murder weapon), and then seeing how Alison treated Jenna when she first came to Rosewood (The Gaga face-off), Jenna has become a bigger suspect recently. Not to mention “A”’s interest in Toby (Keegan Allen), and breaking him and Spencer up, and the original “Jenna thing,” where she wound up blind because of Alison and the Little Liars playing with firecrackers.
Alison’s possible twin sister: In the Halloween episode, Season 2, Episode 13: “The First Secret,” we saw a very revealing family photograph on Alison’s old bedroom wall. Her brother Jason (Drew Van Acker) was photographed in between photos of Alison and what appeared to be another age-equivalent blonde sister. Also, in the Season 2 mid-season finale (Season 2, Episode 12: “Over My Dead Body”), Emily was taken out of the death trap barn by what she is positive was Alison. The only realistic explanation that excludes a mere hallucination is that Alison’s twin sister is the one who saved her life.
What do you think? Have all the male “A” suspects suddenly disappeared from view? Are we looking only at the female half now? Tell us in the comments below!
