When Maya St. Germain (Bianca Lawson) returned to Pretty Little Liars this fall fans went crazy. Their overwhelming reaction seemed to scream “Samara, who?” even as Emily (Shay Mitchell) appeared to have moved on from her troubled first love.

Maya will be back when PLL returns for the second half of Season 2 in January. And although she was the person who served as emotional support for Emily when she was first starting to accept her sexual identity, Bianca tells us that this spring those roles will be reversed.

Wetpaint Entertainment caught up with Lawson at the GUESS by Marciano & VOGUE 2011 Holiday Collection Debut, where she dished about the second half of the season, how she hopes she’s not “A” and why she thinks Emily and Maya are meant to be.

Did you expect the fan reaction to Maya’s return?
Oh my God, no! I was so excited! So excited. I’m not on Twitter, or online that way, so I’d run into people at the mall and they’d be like, “Oh my God, when is Maya coming back?” That’s very sweet.

Is she back to stay?
You’ll have to wait and see.

But certainly she’s back for the second half of the season?
Yes. She’s around for a minute. I mean, I don’t know…A lot of stuff happens – a lot of drama, romance…so we’ll see!

What can we tease about the second half of the season?
Things aren’t as they appear to be. And it will get very sexy.

For Maya?
Maybe, maybe…

What do you make of the rumors that Maya might be “A”?
Anybody could be “A”. Would I want to be “A”? No, I wouldn’t actually, because how would she be able to do that stuff anyway? She’d have to have a group of people working together and what would Maya’s motive be? From where I stand Maya genuinely is in love with Emily and I just can’t imagine her putting Emily through that suffering.

Do you see them as meant to be?
I do. I think they’re really similar and I think that in a weird way they have grown up together. Maya came into Emily’s life at a time when she needed that push to really embrace who she was, who she is, and to feel like it’s OK. And now Maya is going through things and Emily is helping her evolve through her personal issues. So I just think they have a really deep connection. It’s not like an infatuation or a lustful thing. That’s there, but I think they’re meant to be. Even though on the surface they seem very different I think that they’re a lot alike.

I think you just offered a tease. Will we delve more into Maya’s personal life?
Yes, you absolutely will, and you’ll get to see what’s beneath all that stuff. There’s always a deeper reason for things, and I think that you’re going to get to see other sides of Emily and Maya. They’re challenged in a different way than they were in Season 1, and [you’ll see] how they move through all of that, especially at their age.
