Yesterday, we discovered that the Pretty Little Liars episode just before the big finale of Pretty Little Liars Season 2 is called “If These Dolls Could Talk.” Which got us thinking: what is the apparent importance of all the dolls we’ve seen on Pretty Little Liars, and why would they be the focus of the penultimate Season 2 episode?

We first saw the Pretty Little Liars interact with dolls on Season 2, Episode 12: “Over My Dead Body.” At that point, the Little Liars received a large box at Spencer’s (Troian Bellisario) house, with three very creepy American Girl-style dolls assigned to Spencer, Aria (Lucy Hale), and Hanna (Ashley Benson).

Each doll instructed their girl to do something big, or else Dr. Sullivan would die. Hanna had to break up her dad’s marriage to Kate’s mom; Spencer had to break up with Toby (Keegan Allen); and Aria had to blackmail Ezra’s (Ian Harding) threatening ex-girlfriend Jackie. Emily (Shay Mitchell), of course, got her doll later, with instructions to well, go into a barn and die.

We next saw the dolls in Season 2, Episode 15: “A Hot Piece of A,” when a photo of all four dolls was found by Caleb (Tyler Blackburn) on “A”’s phone. Spencer soon found out that “A”’s photo was taken in her lake house’s attic. “A” had been setting up the dolls and presumably planning her personalized attacks inside Spencer’s lake house!

Of course, these aren’t the only dolls we’ve seen connected to Ali (Sasha Pieterse) and “A.” When Jason (Drew Van Acker) gave Aria one of Alison’s hidden boxes of personal items, there was a stuffed doll in the box. It was only recently, on Season 2, Episode 17: “Blond Leading the Blind” that we learned the significance of the doll. Ali had hidden an old, ominous note presumably from “A” — written on the back of Noel’s (Brant Daugherty) Halloween Party invitation. Ali had never told the Little Liars about it, up to the day she died.

So now we learn that, in Episode 24, the girls will follow clues that lead them to a “doll hospital that holds some very familiar looking dolls and a little boy that knows more than he leads onto,” according to ABC Family.

Eerie stuff. All our old American Dolls are suddenly looking very sinister.
