Paige and Emily kissed on Pretty Little Liars? Say what?! And to think that Paige was trying to drown Emily not two episodes ago. We’d hate to think how she treats people whom she’s not attracted to!
At the start of the episode (entitled “The New Normal”), Ashley’s mom — who finally thought she was in the clear for stealing Mrs. Potter’s money once Mrs. Potter died — is paid a surprise visit by James Leland, claiming to be Mrs. Potter’s lone remaining heir. But it looks like James might be trying to collect an inheritance that isn't really owed to him.
Aria and Hanna have decided to move on from last week’s feud, but Aria has other problems. Byron is having a parent/teacher conference with Mr. Fitz to discuss Aria (awkward, much?), but Byron can’t stop questioning Ezra about the fact that Ezra and Ella are planning to go out on a Friday night to meet a writer whom Byron doesn’t respect. In fact, jealous Byron keeps picking a fight with Ezra. Way to play it cool, buddy!
It turns out that the Marin household is a popular place. Caleb — who’s still crashing in the basement — shows up at the door and randomly introduces himself to Ashley, who disapproves.
And just then, James Leland shows up to take Ashley out. Ashley has him sign something, but Caleb is suspicious of the type of pen that James — a supposed architect — uses. We’re surprised that Caleb even knows about any type of pen besides a Bic.
Spencer and the girls manage to crack Jenna’s Braille message, but the letters — B-A-D — are vague. So Toby offers to meet up with Spencer while Jenna is away at flute practice.
When they meet, Toby mentions that the evidence against him has been tossed, and he’s a free man for now. But let’s address more important issues — namely, how hot are things getting between Spencer and Toby? (Answer: Very hot.)
Caleb does a little research — because when you need someone to snoop, Caleb’s your man — and discovers that the real James Leland died years ago, but Ashley won’t buy that he’s a fraud. So she still takes James to the deposit box, but she is smart enough to tell him to call his bank, and when he demurs, she knows something’s fishy. Caleb saves the day yet again!
Emily’s mom, Pam, hears that Paige’s dad, Nick, stormed into the cafeteria and claimed that Emily was getting special treatment on the swim team for being gay. So Pam stands up for her daughter, despite her mixed feelings about her lifestyle. And then we get our biggest shock of the night: Paige hops into Em’s car and totally kisses her! (And not to quibble, but isn’t this totally the Karofsky-Kurt plotline from Glee?)
Speaking of unlikely couples, Hanna and Caleb seem about ready to get it on, now that Caleb — who was planning to bolt for Arizona — is sticking around. (However, Hanna didn’t feel great about “A” sending that exterminator to inspect her basement as a prank.) And Spence and Toby realize that Jenna’s Braille message actually stands for “214.” What they don’t know is that it’s the room number for some mysterious hotel room in town. (But why didn't it mean 2/14 as in Valentine's Day? Are they not addressing the holiday on the show?)
So this ended up being an appropriate episode for Valentine’s Day, with all of those surprising couples. And we hope that you all had a great Valentine’s Day, too! We just hope that you showed your love through something other than trying to drown that person.
