We’re just days away from finding out who the Pretty Little Liars betrAyer is on the Season 3 summer finale (Season 3, Episode 12: “The Lady Killer”, airing August 28). Starting with ABC Family’s list of 12 potential suspects, we’ve taken a closer look at why certain key characters might be the betrAyer and therefore on the “A” team.
Next up? Toby (Keegan Allen). It’s a long shot, but in Rosewood, anything is always possible, and he is on ABC Family's list. Here are a few reasons why he might turn out to be the betrAyer.
He’s always MIA. Towards the end of Season 2, Spencer (Troian Bellisario) lied to Toby and told him she didn’t love him in order to keep him safe. Toby then went on a truth-seeking mission to get to the bottom of Dr. Sullivan’s disappearance. Weeks later, he suddenly showed up in Rosewood again the same night that Mona (Janel Parrish) was revealed to be “A.” He “found” Dr. Sullivan somehow, but we still don’t know where he went, how he was able to find her, and what else he knows.
Now, Toby has disappeared once again. After Spencer refused to tell him anything about the new “A” team or Jason’s (Drew Van Acker) accident, he just bolted. Where is he sleeping? What about work? Is he on another investigative fact-finding expedition? Or, is he working with the “A” team?
He lives alone in a loft. We know that the “A” team has a new location where they’re scheming. In Season 3, Episode 11: “Single Fright Female,” we saw one “A” hand another “A” a key. What if Toby’s mysterious loft, which we’ve only seen in a few brief scenes, is where the “A” team meets? It would be the perfect front.
Maybe he feels betrayed by Spencer. What if Toby found out about the night Spencer got drunk and slept over at Wren’s (Julian Morris) apartment? As far as we know, he never found out about it, but if he was able to find and produce Dr. Sullivan after she’d gone missing, then something like his ex-girlfriend’s drunken rendez-vous would be a cinch.
Maybe he wants revenge against the Liars. Let’s not forget that Toby still has a big reason to hate the Little Liars after they suspected him of killing Alison (Sasha Pieterse) in Season 1. They effectively turned him into a complete social pariah by pointing their fingers, and he’ll never quite lose that prime suspect stench.
Do you think it’s possible that Toby is currently working on the “A” team? If so, what reason(s) do you think he would have? Share your thoughts and theories in the comments below!
Catch the PLL Season 3 summer finale on Tuesday, August 28 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC Family.
