In both new episodes of Pretty Little Liars Season 3, Alison (Sasha Pieterse) has made a very mysterious appearance. In the premiere (Season 3, Episode 1: “It Happened ‘That Night’”), we saw Mona (Janel Parrish) looking at her in the mental hospital, and in Season 3, Episode 2: “Blood Is the New Black”, we saw her in Aria’s (Lucy Hale) flashback.
In the flashback we learned that back when Aria still had pink hair and Ali was still alive the duo went snooping in Byron’s (Chad Lowe) office at Hollis College for evidence that he was having an affair with then-student Meredith. When Aria wasn’t looking, Ali just happened to find a pair of earrings which she said proved Meredith was spending time on Byron’s couch. Ali and Aria proceeded to trash Byron’s office, making it look like Meredith had gone on a crazy, jealous raid.
But when Meredith told Aria in the present that those weren’t her earrings, it became clear that Alison had probably planted them there. If that's true, why would Ali want Aria to feel even more sad and disappointed than she already did?
Ali has always goaded the Little Liars into emotional tantrums, from leading Emily (Shay Mitchell) on to subtly mocking Hanna’s (Ashley Benson) weight. So it could have just been a case of Ali trying to mess with Aria’s life by encouraging her rage. But something else happened in the episode that made us wonder if the earrings are a sign of a much larger plot to trick the Liars. Especially since we learned that Aria had thrown the earrings into Alison’s grave when she was buried.
When Jenna (Tammin Sursok) saw the earring in the bathroom, she picked it up, and looked around, paranoid. She was visibly frightened, and hurried to compose herself and leave. Our question is, if Jenna is the one who drove Emily to Ali’s dug-up grave, why would she be surprised to see the earrings? Is it possible that Jenna was in on the grave-robbing, but another member of the “A” team is sending the Little Liars messages using parts from Ali’s grave? Could this team be completely disorganized? If so, who would big, bad Jenna be afraid of?
Of course, there is also the twin option. If the show is continuing to mirror the books, then the “Alison” we see in flashbacks is actually Courtney, Ali’s twin sister. If Courtney was the one taunting and torturing the Little Liars back when they were friends, then Alison is the one that killed her sister. And the real Alison may still be lurking around Rosewood (maybe even visiting Mona, and working together with Jenna!).
