The Pretty Little Liars Season 3 premiere (Season 3, Episode 1: “It Happened ‘That Night’”) spent a lot of time setting up various storylines, meaning that some key players were left out of the action. We know that Jason (Drew Van Acker) will return on next week’s episode (Season 3, Episode 2: “Blood Is the New Black”), and so will Jenna (Tammin Sursok). But what about Rosewood’s most mysterious sister, Melissa Hastings (Torrey DeVitto)?

Melissa’s name was mentioned in passing twice — first, when Hanna (Ashley Benson) wonders aloud if Melissa could have been the one who dug up Alison’s (Sasha Pieterse) grave; and second, when Mrs. Hastings cryptically refers to a happier time in the Hastings family history, “before Melissa...” Before Melissa did what? Got involved with Ian (Ryan Merriman) and the N.A.T. club?

In any case, five months have passed since we last saw Melissa, standing at the edge of Emily’s (Shay Mitchell) property as Maya’s (Bianca Lawson) dead body was taken to the ambulance on a stretcher. One thing in particular must have happened to Melissa since then: She must have had her baby. Right?

The timing suggests so, since we pick up on the two-year anniversary of Alison’s death. Earlier this year, a fan asked showrunner Marlene King if Melissa would ever have her baby, and Marlene replied, “Wait for it. Wait for it.” Well, we can’t exactly wait longer than nine months in Rosewood time.

Then again, we’ve been wondering if Melissa was ever pregnant in the first place. Is it possible that she pulled a Terri Schuester on Glee, and faked her pregnancy to try and keep Ian from straying with Ali (or for some other nefarious reason)? The only real evidence we have that she was still pregnant was her claim that she and Garrett (Yani Gellman) were going to the OB/GYN together, and we don't exactly trust either of them. There’s also the lingering possibility that Melissa is the Black Swan. As we’ve theorized, the skinny brunette resembled Melissa, minus the pregnant belly.

We’re waiting, Marlene!
