Now that we’ve had a few days to get over the shock of Garrett’s (Yani Gellman) death on Pretty Little Liars in the Season 3 Halloween episode (Season 3, Episode 13: “This Is a Dark Ride”), it’s time to try and figure out who killed him. As the Liars decided towards the end of the episode, “A” is responsible. But “A” is more than one person — who actually committed the murder?
Right now, Toby (Keegan Allen) and Mona (Janel Parrish) are the only confirmed members of the “A” team. And in an early scene, we saw Toby give Garrett an incredibly threatening look when Garrett told Spencer (Troian Bellisario) he had something important to tell her about the night Alison (Sasha Pieterse) died. That look seemed to indicate a motive.
Then again, nothing that Garrett had to say implicated Toby or Mona. Garrett told Spencer that Jenna (Tammin Sursok) might be under the impression that he killed Alison, and that he saw Alison and Byron Montgomery (Chad Lowe) together just before she died. He also implied that the N.A.T. club is being killed off, one by one, by the “A” team. None of that makes Mona or Toby look any more suspicious than they already do. So why would Toby kill to keep that information secret?
Our next suspect is Mona, for many of the same reasons as Toby. As above, the same counter-arguments apply. But what about the joker?
We’ve gone over our suspicions about who the joker might be, and after re-watching the episode, we think it’s very possible that they killed Garrett. When Spencer went to look for Aria (Lucy Hale) after Garrett told her everything, she found Garrett’s baby monster mask on the platform. Seconds later, the joker came out from behind a door and tried to strangle her. Coincidence? Or a major clue?
We also have to consider that Byron had perhaps the greatest reason to want Garrett dead. As the only witness to Byron’s conversation with Ali the night she died, Garrett posed a major threat for Byron, who clearly wants to keep that secret. Could Aria’s father have done the deed?
