There were many scary moments during Pretty Little Liars Season 3, Episode 13: “This Is a Dark Ride,” from Aria’s (Lucy Hale) near-death experience to Spencer (Troian Bellisario) getting attacked by an anonymous joker with long red nails. But we have to admit that the person who scared us the most was the creepy little girl who haunted the Marin household, looking for her mom.

Who was the ghostly blond girl?

From the moment she showed up, she was a mystery. She appeared to be about 7 or 8 years old, and she wore a Victorian style of nightgown, and she entered alone through the back door, where Ashley Marin (Laura Leighton) found her. The girl asked, “May I call my mother? I wanna go home.” And then, “I’m cold and I wanna go home.”

Ashley told her that there was nothing to be afraid of, and the little girl said, “People shouldn’t make scary things.” Ashley said that scary things can be fun, and the girl said, “I don’t think so anymore.”

Later, when Ashley found the little girl with curly blond hair eerily similar to Alison’s (Sasha Pieterse), the girl was upstairs and told Ashley about her evil sister. “My sister is always telling lies, getting me in trouble. We’re sisters, but we fight all the time over everything, even our dolls. I think she just likes to fight.”

Right now, we’re split between two theories. Let’s start with the less plausible one: the little girl was a ghost! There are various clues that point to this being the case, including how cold to the touch she was, and the fact that Ashley was the only person who saw her. She was dressed all in white, and spoke in a scary tone. Plus, she vanished after Ashley left the upstairs room.

Another theory we have is that the little girl was part of a memory Ashley had. Perhaps years ago, that little girl did visit the Marins’ home one night. And perhaps she did try to call her mother, only to hear her mom get “really upset” and start to cry. We think it’s possible that Ashley is remembering a night when Alison’s twin sister Courtney escaped from Radley Sanitarium in the middle of the night, and simply wanted to go back home.

The whole sister relationship also helps the twin theory. After all, if Alison’s twin from the books does become a part of PLL, they would need to paint a portrait of what happened to those two little girls in the past. This memory could be the first clue.

There’s also the possibility that the little girl was just lost and cold, and behaved weirdly because she was a weird kid. But we know PLL better than that, and we can discount that theory right away. The dialogue was too significant, and so was the girl’s appearance.
