Even though we only found out recently that Paige (Lindsey Shaw) has a violent past on Pretty Little Liars, eagle-eyed viewers probably picked up on Paige’s crazy vibes starting in Season 1. We took a look back at some of the early signs that Paige could eventually lose her marbles, or at least lose her nerve, when it comes to Emily (Shay Mitchell).
Consider these refreshers a guide to Paige’s psychological damage.
Season 1, Episode 15: “If At First You Don’t Succeed, Lie, Lie Again”
This was the first time we ever met Paige. Paige wants to become the captain of the swim team, and tries giving her teammates little presents to sway their vote. But then the coach interrupts her, and tells everyone that Emily has broken a new record.
Later, Paige picks up Emily’s bra, makes a comment about testing Emily for steroids and mocks Em’s sexuality. Then she tries to drown Emily in the practice pool! After Emily struggles free, Paige screams at Emily for trying to take her place as the best swimmer.
Season 1, Episode 16: “Je Suis Un Ami”
Paige and Emily are up against each other for the top position on the team again, but this time, Paige gets into a mysterious bike accident, so she can’t swim. She shows up at Emily’s house in the middle of the night, soaking wet, and seems to apologize for her erratic behavior. Since Emily is so trusting, she shows compassion. Did the accident ever really happen?
Season 1, Episode 17: “The New Normal”
Paige’s dad outs Emily to the entire school by screaming in the middle of the high school cafeteria that Emily gets special treatment on the swim team because she’s gay. Paige winds up kissing Emily, and then avoids her, making up excuses and lies that have something to do with her grandmother.
Season 1, Episode 21: “Monsters in the End”
Paige promises Emily that she’ll meet her at a Pride event, but never shows up.
Season 2, Episode 25: “UnmAsked”
Paige shows up to the masquerade ball with a mask on, and tells Emily out of nowhere that they can officially be friends now. Could this have been an early sign that Paige killed Maya (Bianca Lawson)? After all, she could have been pretending that she was okay with just being friends with Emily, secretly knowing that with Maya out of the picture.
Season 3, Episode 10: “What Lies Beneath”
Paige knocked over those garbage cans like nobody’s business. And her overly saccharine lie the next morning about being sick? Creepy.
