We love Julian Morris’ adorable British accent and his cheeky smile, so we would watch him in pretty much any role. Currently, he’s gracing our television sets (and stealing our hearts) as two completely different characters: Prince Phillip on ABC’s Once Upon A Time and as Dr. Wren Kingston on ABC Family’s Pretty Little Liars. Luckily, we live in a world where we don’t have to choose between these two fictional hotties, but that doesn’t mean we can’t have some fun measuring the two Julian roles up against one another. This is the Battle of the Julians!
If we have a Julian Morris character, we want to see as much of him as possible. So, how do these two characters do in a competition of screen time? Well, Dr. Wren Kingston has been a recurring character on PLL since the very first episode, appearing in a total of 18 episodes. Though he disappears for episodes at a time, he always manages to pop up again in a timely manner.
Prince Phillip, on the other hand, didn’t make his first OUAT appearance until Season 2, Episode 1: “Broken.” Since then, he has appeared in another two episodes, but in flashback form. Even taking into account that PLL is in its third season while OUAT is only in its second, Wren is still in a greater percentage of episodes than Phillip.
As much as we love a bad boy, both of Julian’s shows have their fair share of villains, so we’re giving points for good guy behavior. How do Wren and Phillip score in the category?
Wren has been there for Spencer (Troian Bellisario), most recently in the aftermath of Toby’s betrayal. However, we can’t help but recall that, when the two first met (and flirted and kissed), Wren was engaged to Spence’s big sister. We also can’t help but be suspicious of anyone in Rosewood who is interested in a Liar. We know we’re paranoid -- the Liars are smart, kind, good-looking girls -- but there’s a killer on the loose!
We haven’t had as much of a chance to get to know Prince Phillip, but what he lacks in opportunity to prove himself to the viewers, he makes up for in self-sacrificing behavior. Phillip spent years trying to save Aurora from the sleeping curse and, when he finally did, sacrificed himself to the Wraith to save Aurora and Mulan. Even when he was transformed into a Yaoguia, he managed not to hurt the many village people who were trying to kill him. We know this sort of thing is par for the course with Disney princes (just ask Charming), but that doesn’t mean we’re any less impressed.
The Romance Department
We couldn’t help but swoon at Julian’s recent confession that he is a diehard Wrencer fan. He’s a romantic at heart! So, how do his on-screen romances measure up against one another?
Wren and Spencer have been growing closer since Toby stomped on Spence’s heart by working for the “A” Team and if the above interview is anything to go by, there could be a bright future ahead for Wrencer. They’ve never really gotten the timing right, but Spencer really needs someone to watch her back right now (and the background in mental health, couldn’t hurt either). We would love to see these two work it out.
Phillip and Aurora (Sarah Bolger) seemed pretty together in “Broken.” We have to admit that Aurora has gotten on our nerves a bit so far, but there is also the Mulan (Jamie Chung) dynamic to consider (plus, we do love Sarah Bolger). We know that Mulan is in love with Phillip and that they spent months fighting side-by-side on his quest to wake Aurora. Right before Phillip sacrifices himself to the Wraith, he says, “I love you.” The assumption is that he was talking to Aurora, but he could have been talking to Mulan or both of them. How awesome would it be to see a Phillip/Aurora/Mulan love triangle?
Winner: Phillip and Wren...What can we say? Julian makes a good romantic prospect whatever show he’s on.
Now, if Wren were a character on any other show, we would probably consider his “alive” status as enough to clinch the security of future appearances and the “Battle of the Julians” title, but people drop like flies on the streets of Rosewood. Spoilers tells us that there will be at least one more death this season and, unlike OUAT, characters on PLL usually stay dead.
We’ve been dancing around the tiny, insignificant detail that Prince Phillip is quasi-dead. We thought he was fully dead before Cora (Barbara Hershey) told Aurora that people claimed by the Wraith did not die, but rather their soul went to another realm. Cora is not the most trustworthy of sources, but we do admit that people don’t often stay dead on this show. We have hope for Phillip!
Winner: Phillip and Wren.
For those of you counting, that makes this Battle of the Julians a draw! You should have known we could never choose between the Doctor and the Prince. What can we say? They’re both adorable. Barring any future twists (i.e. Wren is “A,” Phillip is really Cora in disguise), we’re going to have to call this a tie.
