The Season 3 finale of Pretty Little Liars introduced a whole host of new questions, including the nature of the relationship between the sometimes-blind beauty Jenna (Tammin Sursok) and newcomer knockout Shana (Miranda Aerial). The two shared this scene in the woods - subtle enough to be close friends, but intimate enough to be something more. Is Jenna gay or, more accurately, bi-sexual?
One of the first PLL secrets (one of many Ali had in her arsenal) was that step-siblings Toby and Jenna were in some sort of sexual relationship. At first, the Liars thought Toby was molesting his step-sister, but Toby later reveals to Spencer that it was the other way around. He claims that Jenna manipulated him into a sexual relationship by threatening to tell their parents that they were already in one. If this is true, it would seem Jenna wanted Toby. One point for Team Boy.
Jenna followed up her “relationship” with Toby by dating Garrett and then Noel, making us assume that she was straight. We’re still not really sure what the deal was with the Garrett break-up and the Noel hook-up. It all happened so fast, and there was always a taste of scheming about it. Were these relationships just fronts for “A” or “B” team business? Or were they something Jenna was actually invested in?
The Jenna/Shana thing is so new, we’re not yet sure what to make of it. After all, they’ve only, had one scene together...but it was an intimate scene. Jenna doesn’t let down her ice cold exterior for just anyone, so when she does, it stands out. The way these two held hands and Shana proclaimed her commitment to be there for Jenna “on her darkest days” seemed quite intimate. Plus, we know that Shana at least is attracted to girls as she dated Paige and, to Hanna’s discontent, flirts with everyone but her. But what about Jenna?
We couldn’t help but remember this scene from Season 2, Episode 13 when Emily and Jenna eye-flirt with each other across the room. It is a flashback to a Halloween party before Ali “died” and, when it aired, seemed more to do with Emily’s sexuality than Jenna’s. In retrospect, however, we wonder if Jenna was not just trying to make Ali jealous, but was actually interested in Emily.
We already know the show has no problem depicting gay and bi-sexual characters and, given last night’s episode, we think Jenna may be bi-sexual or, at the very least, bi-curious. We’ll have to wait to find out! Let’s just hope there are more Jenna scenes in Season 4 than there were in Season 3B.
What do you think of the relationship between Jenna and Shana? Are they romantic or just friends? Let us know in the comments below!
