One of the creepiest parts of the Pretty Little Liars Season 3 Halloween episode (Season 3, Episode 13: “This Is a Dark Ride”) was the haunting little girl who appeared to Ashley Marin (Laura Leighton).

Everyone wants to know who she is — and, just as importantly, what she is. Most fans figure she's not just some random normal girl, but that still leaves the field wide open. Hints in the episode pointed to the girl being a ghost (for instance, her extremely cold hands, and the way she just disappeared), but many fans think that's a bit too supernatural for this show.

Is it possible the girl was really a ghostly spirit? The episode's writer, Joseph Dougherty, recently weighed in on Twitter.

A fan tweeted at Joseph, asking, "the little kid in Ashley's was a ghost or remembrance?" (The second option is a reference to the popular theory that the girl was a memory from Ashley's past.)

Joseph replied, "If you're asking me, a ghost."

Whoa! Of course, Joseph saying "if you're asking me" means that this question might not ever be answered for sure on the show, or it might be answered in a different way. While Joseph wrote the episode, showrunner Marlene King gets to make the final call on big questions like this.

Still, it sounds like the hints that the girl was a ghost were not total misleads, and PLL might be a little more supernatural than we thought — at least on Halloween!

Do you like the idea that the girl is a ghost, or do you think it's the wrong tone for the show?
