Pretty Little Liars star Janel Parrish (Mona) is getting ready to show off her singing talent — and her sexuality — in  the new Los Angeles production of the stage musical Spring Awakening.

The actress best known for playing Mona on the ABC Family hit is more than ready to stretch for the controversial play about teen sex that has been shocking theatergoers since 2006.

“It’s been one of my favorite musicals ever since it came out, and I’ve been wanting to do it for such a long time,” Janel told Wetpaint Entertainment in an exclusive interview.

In fact, musical theater is Janel’s first love, as she got her start on Broadway in Les Miserables when she was a child. “I’ve been so busy with Pretty Little Liars and some other things that I haven’t done theater in about 11 years,” she said. “I told my manager that if auditions for Spring Awakening ever pop up at any time, I want to go to audition.  And it just ended up working out perfectly because Pretty Little Liars is on hiatus until April, when we start filming again.  So it just ended up being perfect timing that I could fit the musical right into our break.”

Janel is playing Anna, “the outspoken leader of the group” of girls in Spring Awakening, which debuts in Hollywood on March 16. “She’s a little fire ball, very sassy. We got some really fun power girl number where we sing five part harmonies.”

In addition to portraying Anna, Janel will understudy for her stage co-star Lindsay Pearce (Glee), who plays the lead role of Wendla. And Janel’s not afraid of the part, which will show her simulating sex on stage during a steamy nude scene. “I will get to play Wendla at least once. That’s actually one of my dream roles. I have a show date, March 31st, and I’m pretty sure the whole theater is going to be full of people that I know. Everyone that I know in my life will be there in the audience, very close to the stage while I’m doing some very interesting things, ” she laughed.

But Janel knows her loyal fans won’t just be staring at her body. Her PLL character Mona has never broken into song on the show, so fans will be delighted to discover Janel’s singing prowess. “I’ve been tweeting about [Spring Awakening], and I’ve had some fans say that they were surprised that I sing, and they were going to come out and see, so that’s nice.”
