Watch out, Pretty Little Liars ! While “A” was unmasked last season as Mona Vanderwaal (Janel Parrish) and sent away to the insane asylum, star Keegan Allen (Toby Cavanaugh) revealed at a recent set visit that you can’t let your guard down! In fact, there will be a new “A” in town spelling terror for our favorite girls. But is this new boss the same as the old boss—that is, a person working with Mona? While we anxiously wait for the just-days-away Season 3 premiere (Season 3, Episode 1: “It Happened ‘That Night’”), Keegan teases us with tidbits on the new PLL storylines and characters.
Where do you pick up in the season premiere?
I think an entire summer has gone by [and] it is tough. It is after Maya passed away and the girls found out about Mona. This whole summer goes by and it was very stressful for the girls, so it picks up right where that is and they all have their issues that they are going through. It is going to be a very dramatic push right back into the series. Everybody will be very shocked at what happens right off the bat.
Which character has had the hardest summer?
I am sure you guys can piece together if you lost somebody, it would be a pretty tough summer, especially a love interest or someone you are good friends with.
How do you think the show is going to change now that “A” has been identified?
I think it is going to change in a lot of drastic ways. We did discover “A” but there is a new “A” and this new “A” is going to take it to a whole other level that no one could have predicted. The girls are going to have a lot to deal with in the new season.
Is the new “A” part of a team?
I don't really know. It is definitely going to be really, really crazy and shocking. Whereas before there was violence that Mona would preoccupy the girls with, this A is really going to pull some punches on them.
How is that going to affect your character?
Toby did know about “A” and know about Mona and Spencer. He is going to start understanding more. Spencer is going to open up to him more in this season. We will see. Maybe he will help them; maybe not.
Will we find out who the new “A” is this season -- or will it be drawn out?
I don't know. You could and you could not. It is in the midst of should we do that or not. I don't really know. We are still shooting.
Many fans think Mona couldn't have done it alone. Do you think the new A is connected to her?
Poss...You will see. It does raise a lot of questions like that. Is Mona just an arm to a huge body of people? Is that how this is going to be? We don't know. That is half the fun of watching this show--you don't know what will happen. You never know what is behind that veil -- door No. 1 so to speak, which is really interesting.
Let's say that one of the main four characters is behind door No. 1. Are you rooting for one of them to have an evil streak?
It would be really interesting if one of the four were part of the A team. There has been so much talk on the set of different outcomes of everything and it is fun to come up with those. Even though we are part of this, we still do what everybody else is doing. I love going in with the writers and talking with them about, "Oh, what if this happened? What if that happened?" There are some pretty out [there] theories that could possibly be true.
Can you tell us about new characters coming in this season?
I can [only] tell you there are new characters coming in. They all play their part in the grand scheme of things.
Will fans recognize them from the book?
Possibly. There might be some characters coming from the book; there might be some characters being grabbed out of space. There are definitely new characters that will interact with all of us in a very authentic way to create further storyline with A and everything.
How does having new characters join the show energize regular cast members?
It energizes us and gives more to the storyline. What is so interesting being part of this show is you find out secrets along the way. The path is always being written and you are finding out secrets from the past that the writers are creating. When they introduce new characters, it adds more to the storylines that we never even knew to begin with. They have whole new plots they come with on their backs. These new actors -- everybody is so great and professional. It is going to be so great.
