The Pretty Little Liars universe is a lot of things: dramatic, unpredictable, exciting, and often quite scary … mostly for the Liars. But somehow, these four girls keep moving forward. Their friendship is stronger than ever and they’re thinking about their futures. Considering some of the events of the last year, that’s a pretty big accomplishment. So in honor of the times when we thought the black gloves might actually win, we’ve rounded up the scariest moments of 2012.

We recommend reading this with the lights on.

Lucas (Brendan Robinson) and Hanna (Ashley Benson) take a boat ride: When Hanna climbed into that boat, we were tense, to say the least. Alone with Lucas in the middle of a lake? Hanna almost gave us a heart attack with this one.

Spencer (Troian Bellisario) and Mona’s (Janel Parrish) carpool: We knew something huge was about to happen when Spencer got into Mona’s car in the Season 2 finale. And what it lead to haunted our dreams for week after ...

A’s lair: Mona drove Spencer to her super creepy lair, where she put on her hoodie and made us sleep with a night light for a week.

Emily (Shay Mitchell) is drugged: The night that Emily was drugged is horrifying on a number of levels. Not remembering an entire evening? It gives us chills.

Hanna and Emily trapped in Noel’s(Brant Daugherty) cabin: Trying to retrieve Maya’s (Bianca Lawson) bag nearly cost Hanna and Emily their lives, and it certainly scared us.

Mona’s dolls: The doll room at Radley Sanitarium? Need we say more?

Nate and Emily’s cabin getaway: We were always suspicious of Nate, but finding out that he wanted to kill Paige (Lindsey Shaw) to punish Emily? We did not see that coming.

Toby’s (Keegan Allen) reveal: Equal parts heartbreaking and terrifying.

The "ghost": The only thing creepier than a ghost is a little girl ghost, are we right?

The “A” train: From Hanna getting felt up to Aria (Lucy Hale) getting stuck in a box with Garrett’s (Yani Gellman) dead body and nearly thrown off a moving train, we think it’s safe to say that the “A” train was the scariest event of 2012.
