I believe I can fly! In this week’s episode of Pretty Little Liars (Season 2, Episode 23: “Eye of the Beholder”), Aria (Lucy Hale) proves she’d be perfect for a role in the upcoming Top Gun sequel; the Liars find more old newspapers than you’d see in an episode of Hoarders; and something goes down in flames this week besides Lindsay Lohan’s career.

Wherein Aria Kinda Goes on a Date With Vivian’s Boyfriend. (That’s Not Weird, Right?)

To be honest, we’re usually hesitant to let anyone else drive our car, so we have to toss out a big “what the hell were you thinking, dude” to Duncan (Lachlan Buchanan), who encourages Aria to go for a joy ride in, uh, his airplane. So maybe that’s what happened to the plane on the show Lost — the pilot was trying to impress some random chick, and then things went bad? (Then again, could the smoke monster be that much worse than “A”? We think not.)

So did someone say “Duncaria”? No, that made-up word hasn’t caught on yet, but we can’t help but wonder if a bit of romance could be brewing between these two. And even if not, there’s no doubt that Duncan provided ample help already, telling Aria that he flew Vivian (aka Alison) back from Hilton Head and that she appeared to have figured something out. Of course, what we can’t figure out is how bad boy-loving Ali somehow fell for a guy who owns a gray cardigan.

We’re thinking that something shocking may happen with Ezra (Ian Harding) in the next two episodes, since his storyline has been sorta repeating itself lately. Could Byron (Chad Lowe) be planning to hurt Ezra for standing up to him and turning down the job? Or is — don’t hate us! — Ezra going to end up being “A”?! We would hate to think so, but all this Lolita imagery — including what looks to be those heart sunglasses among Ali’s things this week — perhaps suggests that Ali and Fitz (the literature expert) were better acquainted than we realize.

Wherein Emily Squeals on Maya — Sort Of.

So where the heck is Maya (Bianca Lawson)? She managed to keep us from totally hating her when we heard how much that romantic night with Emily (Shay Mitchell) meant to her [insert Marvin Gaye song here], but we’re still wondering why Maya is being so cryptic about her whereabouts, or if she’s still with that person in the car whom we heard about last week. And the other thing we’re wondering is why Emily is apparently the only teenager in America who doesn’t have a Gmail account.

We got a little more info about Ali’s old stuff, which Maya found and mysteriously dropped off at Jason’s. The stuff was wrapped in newspaper from before Ali disappeared, with random highlighted sections, plus a circle around an ad for a Labor Day concert. And yes, we still find it ironic whenever the words “Labor Day” are mentioned in connection with Ali, since Ali is the one person who never seemed to have worked a day in her life.

Wherein Spencer and Wren Somehow Make Removing Glass From Someone’s Hand Seem Sexy.

So will it be Wren (Julian Morris) or Spencer (Troian Bellisario)? We keep going back and forth on who we want Spence to choose, although the fact that Spencer didn’t completely disavow her memories of Wren seems like a (slight) triumph in his favor. Still, both Wren and Toby stand a chance, meaning that this is becoming the longest-running love triangle since Betty and Veronica fought for Archie in those comic books. (And in this Archie analogy, which PLL character is Jughead? Sorry, Hanna, but we’re looking in your direction.)

Also, Spencer has to deal with Toby and Jenna (Tammin Sursok) getting closer than ever, with Jenna back from eye surgery. Plus, if Spence’s love life weren’t complicated enough, her family life is in complete disarray, with her mom not trusting Jason and also now admitting that it was her idea to hire a private investigator to watch Melissa (Torrey DeVitto). (Come to think of it, hiring someone to follow your daughter is Sign #2,587 that you won’t be winning a “Mother of the Year” Award.)

Wherein Hanna Realizes That Not Having a Phone is Pretty Annoying.

We hate to admit it, but we can’t promise that we wouldn’t have thought for a second about whether the world would be better off without Jenna in it. Luckily, Hanna (Ashley Benson) is a much bigger person than we are (and we don’t mean that as a “Hefty Hanna” joke), since Hanna immediately helps save Jenna from Jason’s burning house just before it explodes.

And yes, we know that Jason somewhat recently moved back into that house, but setting the place on fire isn’t typically what is meant by a “housewarming.”

Ultimately, though, we were happy to see Hanna hug her mom at the end of the episode, signalling that they had reached a truce. At least one girl one this show has a mom whom she sees on a regular basis and doesn’t actively despise.

Clues:

- Buckle up, folks, as this week was packed with clues galore. (Coincidentally, “buckle up” is also the first thing we would have done if Aria were in control of a plane that we were in.) First thing’s first: Does that fire mean that Jenna is off the hook as an “A” suspect? It’s possible that the fire wasn’t started by “A.”

- So who might have caused the fire, and who lured Jenna to Jason’s? Garrett (Yani Gellman) seems like the obvious answer, since he and Jenna have had some beef, and we see him peeling out in front of Jenna’s house earlier in the episode. However, the fact that “A” placed a police badge at the scene of the crime makes us wonder if “A” is in fact trying to frame Garrett. Then again, it isn’t all that hard for someone to make Garrett seem shady.

- Let’s not forget about Noel as an arson suspect, given that he’d suddenly been spending a lot of time with Jenna for a yet-to-be-explained reason. Or maybe trapping people in burning buildings is what Noel does to anyone who doesn’t skinny-dip with him.

- What exactly was Alison doing on the day she disappeared, in between when Captain Duncan dropped her off from South Carolina and when the girls saw her depart from that cab, some six or seven hours later? Personally, whenever we have six or seven hours to kill, we typically spend it watching a Kardashian marathon. But that’s just us.

- We’re not sure what to make of Ali apparently wrapping her stuff in newspaper and using a highlighter on certain words. Frankly, we thought that the only time Ali ever used the word “highlight” was when she was talking about her hair.

- The other clue in the newspaper was that circle around the notice for a Labor Day concert at the gazebo, as the girls wonder who Ali might have been meeting there. Among the characters that have been previously seen playing a musical instrument on this show are Maya, Jenna, and Noel, so we wonder if one of those three was participating in the concert.

- What was the deal with the torn postcard with just the “#1” written on it? And here we thought *we* were the only ones who get lazy when it comes to writing postcards.

- What else can we learn from the items that the girls find of Ali’s? Among the junk was a toy plane, which makes us wonder if this is a link to Duncan, and perhaps he knows even more than he’s told us. There was also a toy horse, which brings to mind Melissa and Kate’s equestrian camp. And of course there’s the voodoo doll, first seen in Season 2, Episode 13:”The First Secret.”

- Was anyone else feeling uneasy when Mona offered up her old phone to Hanna? We know that Mona is supposedly now in her “Nice Girl” phase, but we still cringe anytime we learn that a character on this show is good with phones, not to mention that don’t like to see of any of the Liars using a phone that may have potentially been tampered with. Note to Hanna: When in doubt, use a pay phone! (Hey, there’s no shame in calling collect once in a while.)

Other Things That Need to Be Discussed:

- The song being played by the music box at the end of the episode is Beethoven’s “Fur Elise.” Come to think of it, this might be the only song to ever appear on PLL that isn’t blowing up on the iTunes charts.

- How hilarious was it that Hanna somehow recognized an outfit that Michelle Obama wore back in 2009? Of course, this is the same girl who presumably has no idea when the next presidential election is. (Translation: It’s good to at least know *something* about the First Family.)

- What exactly was Aria thinking when she wore that top with the tropical fish on it to meet Duncan? Not even famed oceanographer Jacques Cousteau liked fish that much.
