Wow. Wow. This episode started slow, but the second half kicked into high gear, resulting in one of the creepiest PLL experiences this season.

This episode threw a lot at us. A lot.

First, there's CeCe, Alison's (Sasha Pieterse) old friend (and Jason's [Drew Van Acker] ex), who's just as manipulative and domineering as Ali ever was. We're not entirely sure what her story is, but we're intrigued to learn more.

Then there's Nate, who we still don't trust. His interest in Jenna (Tammin Sursok) seems genuine, but we didn't miss the way he suspiciously knows about the earrings Emily (Shay Mitchell) bought Maya (Bianca Lawson) only a few days before her death. How did he know that?

And let's not forget about Jason (Drew Van Acker) who gets drunk, crashes his car, and then rambles about being locked up in jail with Garrett (Yani Gellman) so that justice can finally be done. Um … what? We love that Spencer [Troian Bellisario] takes charge of the situation and gets her half bro out of trouble, though we imagine her new lies will come back to bite her down the line.

And, most importantly, there's Hanna (Ashley Benson), Aria (Lucy Hale), and Mona's (Janel Parrish) story, which is as chilling as anything that has ever been on the show. Wilden (Bryce Johnson) thinks Hanna's blood is on the anklet, and in an attempt to find out if Hanna is being framed, Aria goes to Mona and confronts her in an excellent and well acted scene. Surprise, surprise: Mona is deeply unhelpful.

So then Aria and Hanna break into the insane asylum. In a sequence straight out of a horror film, Mona distracts Aria and Hanna, escapes from her room, and then goes to play with dolls, sing-songing what seems like nonsense until the girls are forced to flee.

But, as Hanna realizes, Mona's songs weren't nonsense, they were a code. She said "Not Safe," and then sent the Liars to a website about Maya, which needs a password.

And that's not all. One Mona phrase the Liars didn't decipher is "Miss Aria you're a killer, not Ezra's wife." Which, if you take each first letter, spells M-A-Y-A K-N-E-W. So, yeah. Think about that all night. We sure will.

Overall, we loved this episode. It's exactly what we want PLL to be: Surprising, chilling, scary, with a dash of humor and romance to lighten the mood. 4.5 stars!
