The Pretty Little Liars Season 3 gave us some answers — Toby (Keegan Allen) is alive! — but even more questions. And one of the biggest is this: What's the deal with Melissa (Torrey DeVitto), Jenna (Tammin Sursok), and Shana (Aeriel Miranda)?
As we noted last night, there's no question that Jenna, Shana, and Melissa are teamed up with each other. We also know that Jenna and Shana moved Wilden's (Bryce Johnson) body, so they have some sort of connection to him, too. Are they part of the "A" team, or are they their own entity? First, let's examine the evidence.
In the first scene involving this team we saw Jenna in her house, on her phone. "You said you were going to make it all go away," she said. "I'm worried. The police have evidence. Look, I need to see you today."
She was then texted instructions about going to the lodge by an "A" who was watching her outside of her house (later, Spencer [Troian Bellisario] has pics from that scene on her phone). Given that Jenna later met up with Shana, we're guessing that's who she was talking to on the phone.
When Jenna met with Shana, she told her, "They'll all be together with us Friday. You know what you need to do." Clearly we were supposed to assume the "they" in question was the Liars, but it's never made explicit.
Later Jenna, Shana, and Melissa met up. Emily (Shay Mitchell) overheard them talking. "You don't understand," Jenna said. "They have the tapes in that — " (it's hard to make out the last word. Let us know if you can figure it out!).
"No, I do understand," Melissa replied. "But those bitches are going to be at the lodge at nine, do you understand?" There's more dialogue in this scene, but it's whispered and hard to make out.
It would also make sense that these girls were the ones later running around in the woods, setting fire to the house and knocking Toby out. After all, as far as we know they were the only ones besides Big "A" who a) knew what was going down b) weren't caught in the house (other than Spencer and Toby, who were obviously busy).
So what does this all add up to? We have three theories.
Jenna/Melissa/Shana are their own team. It would appear these girls are the ones who set the lodge on fire, which doesn't make much sense if they are full members of the "A" team, since a) Mona (Janel Parrish) was also inside, and b) Big "A" then rescued the girls and Mona. Unless the idea was to just give the Liars a big scare, it would appear that Big "A" didn't want the fire; this is also supported by Mona seeming entirely confused by it.
It's possible Jenna/Melissa/Shana are their own team (maybe related to the N.A.T. club), who have their own anti-Liars and/or anti-"A" team agenda. It was never made clear who they were talking about when they said "they" and "those bitches" — the Liars, the "A" team, or both.
Given that Jenna seemed freaked out about something that was supposed to "go away" and the "videos" someone had, it's possible the "A" team has been blackmailing Jenna/Melissa/Shana. Maybe their goal was to take down their "A" enemy, not the Liars. Or perhaps they wanted to killed two birds with one stone. Heck, maybe they mistakenly think the Liars are "A". That would be ironic.
With this theory, the one remaining question is: Who texted Jenna about the lodge, and why? The answer could be Spencer, to try to get help (though how would she know about Team Jenna?), or someone else on the "A" team for their own evil reasons that backfired.
One reason we like this theory is that it could explain who was harassing Alison DiLaurentis (Sasha Pieterse) back in the day, given that she's apparently the Big "A", and probably was not stalking herself (though wouldn't that be a twist). Perhaps this team, or one member of it, was the original "A", and Ali became Big "A" to get revenge.
Jenna/Melissa/Shana are their own, rebellious section of the "A" team. A twist on our first theory: it's also possible that "A" took their blackmail further, forcing Jenna, Melissa, and Shana to take part in the "A" team's schemes. In this case, the rest of this theory plays out basically the same as above, except that Jenna, Melissa, and Shana are a rebellious team-within-a-team.
They are full members of the "A" team. While we find it less likely, we can't entirely discount the idea that these girls are actually part of the "A" team (by choice or because of blackmail), and that this was all part of Big "A’s” plan. Perhaps Big "A" really did just want to mess with the Liars. Perhaps whoever started the fire didn't realize Mona was still inside — or didn't care. No one ever said the "A" team had to value each other.
What do you make of the Jenna/Shana/Melissa alliance? What do you think their connection to the "A" team is? To Wilden? And, most importantly, what do you think we should call them?
