There will be no trick-or-treating in Pretty Little Liars Season 4. It may seem counter-intuitive, but the upcoming Halloween special will not be set on Halloween. How is this silliness possible and why is it necessary? PLL writer Joseph Dougherty explains in a recent tweet:

“We'll show it at Halloween, but it isn't set at Halloween,” clarified Joseph. His tweet was actually a response to a point made by a clever fan: if the episode is taking place between Season 4, Episode 12 and Season 4, Episode 14, as Joseph previously tweeted, and the girls are still seniors in high school, how can it be Halloween if the Liars already celebrated senior year’s Halloween in Season 3, Episode 13: “This Is A Dark Ride”?

So, the show is going the present-day, non-Halloween root. We’re still on board. Not only are “Halloween” episodes of PLL always epic (and highly anticipated as they generally come mid-hiatus), but we will also be getting the introduction of three PLL spin-off characters in the episode. If we have to sacrifice Halloween in Rosewood for a first glimpse at Ravenswood, then we will. Besides, with all of the masks, costumes, and creepiness in Rosewood, it’s basically Halloween all year long!
