We love Spoby, but we know how manipulative “A” can be. We want to believe that Toby (Keegan Allen) would never betray Spencer (Troian Bellisario) and the rest of the Liars, but we can never be sure with “A's" emotional blackmail. Will we be able to trust Toby in Season 4? Pretty Little Liars executive producer Oliver Goldstick weighs in.
It turns out that this is one of those good news/bad news situations. The good news is that Oliver told TV Guide that “yes, [Toby] was genuine” in his “A” team explanation. Oliver further elaborated to TV Line that there was a time when Toby hated the Liars because he assumed they were just like Alison, and we will see a scene depicting those “strong feelings” early on in Season 4. However, Toby’s feelings have changed since then:
“Things have changed because he got to know Emily and then Spencer very well,” said Oliver, “but I don’t regret saying that because he had a lot of residual anger and animosity toward these girls for what happened to him.”
So, Toby is Team Liars... for now. The bad news is that Toby is going to get “sucked back into the vortex of ‘A,’” according to Oliver. How could Toby ever do that to love-of-his-life Spencer?! Well, it turns out “A” knows “something about Toby's past that is going to be emotionally wrenching and is going to pull him back where he doesn't want to be and doesn't have a choice.”
Our best bet is that this tease ties into the appearance of Toby’s mom in the Season 4 premiere. We saw Spencer etch Toby’s name (rather rudely) into Marion Cavanaugh’s tombstone, so we assumed that she was dead, but who ever knows on this show? Could Marion still be alive? If not, what could “A” have on her that would force Toby to move away from the Liars? Let us know your theories in the comments below!
