Pretty Little Liars showrunner Marlene King was asked to describe Season 4 in one word over the weekend. She gave us two: “Answers. Closure.”
Answers is a common theme in the Marlene’s clues for the upcoming season. She has told us to “expect nothing but the truth," and that Mona will be spilling secrets come the Season 4 premiere, possibly including answers to big questions like “Who killed Ian in Season 1?”, “Who killed Garrett on the Halloween train?”, and “Who is Red Coat?”
These are potentially major answers and we hope that they are more conclusive than the Red Coat Reveal we got in the Season 3 finale. Though the Liars saw Ali in the infamous red coat, we are still so unsure of the details surrounding the “reveal” that we’re not even positive if it was Ali or some sort of super-intense mask a la Mission Impossible 3 (could Tom Cruise be Red Coat?). We know suspense requires a precarious balance, but it feels like “make or break” time for this show.
We’re particularly intrigued by the second word Marlene used to describe the season: closure. Closure implies not simply answers, but ending. Could PLL be wrapping up some of the story arcs that have been part of the show for a while? This could refer to a definitive answer as to whether Ali is alive or not, or perhaps absolute confirmation that Mona acted alone as “A” in the beginning. This has been implied in things that Mona has said, but has never clearly been defined.
What do you think of Marlene’s one-word descriptions? What are your hopes for Season 4? Let us know in the comments below!
