Shay Mitchell (Emily) was recently unveiled as the pretty-in-purple cover girl for Seventeen magazine’s August 2012 issue. In the Pretty Little Liars star’s interview inside the magazine, Shay opened up about how she relates to each of her co-stars, her own high school experience, and why “it’s tough being a girl.”

Shay tells Seventeen that she relates to Troian Bellisario (Spencer), Lucy Hale (Aria), and Ashley Benson (Hanna) in completely different ways. “Troian is my go-to when I want advice on something,” she says. “Lucy is so cute and southern. We joke around a lot on-set. And Ashley is like the fun, carefree little sister who I never had.”

But that doesn’t mean life was always so peachy for Shay. She says that when she was in high school, she wanted to be a counselor who worked with kids when she grew up, because “I’ve been through the worst of high school. And I want to motivate people to live the best life that they can, because we’re only here for one life.”

For more of Shay’s wisdom and insight, pick up the August issue of Seventeen, on newsstands July 3.

Catch an all-new episode of PLL on Tuesday, July 10 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC Family.
