Shay Mitchell’s portrayal of Emily on Pretty Little Liars has been one of the most inspiring aspects of the show. We’ve watched Emily go from a closeted, shy girl to a proud, confident, and passionate teenager in an admittedly tumultuous relationship with another girl.

Shay agrees. But she has a whole new spin on why she thinks PLL and Emily are so influential. In a new interview with Bullett Magazine, Shay opens up about her take on lesbian stereotypes and how Emily has shattered them.

“The most amazing thing about our show is that if you were to look at the poster, you wouldn’t be able to pinpoint who plays the lesbian,” she says. “You can be the girl next door and wear bright pink lipstick, and still like girls. I don’t have to be the goth girl in the corner, or a clear outsider.”

We love the idea that PLL is pushing past the traditional image of a gay girl in high school. And Shay is well aware of the power her character can have over viewers who are more like the Pilot version of Emily.

“After seeing the show, I think I might have given someone even just a little bit of strength to [come out]  too.”

Definitely something to be proud of!

Watch the Pretty Little Liars Season 2 finale on Monday at 8 pm ET/PT on ABC Family.
