One of the most heartbreaking scenes in the Pretty Little Liars Season 2 finale (Season 2, Episode 25: “UnmAsked”) was Emily's (Shay Mitchell) reaction to Maya's (Bianca Lawson) death. Will she still be reeling from it in Season 3? And why, exactly, did Maya have to die? Recently, showrunner Marlene King talked to After Ellen to share some thoughts about Emily's future, her sexuality, and Emaya.

"Emily is still very much devastated about Maya's death," Marlene says of the Season 3 premiere (Season 3, Episode 1: “It Happened ‘That Night’”). "She's really in that anger stage of grief as opposed to sadness." She also assures fans that working through her grief about Maya will be a major part of Emily's arc this season.

Marlene also assured fans that although Emily is bi in the books, on the show "she may make a decision or two that will take her on a winding road — but she definitely quickly comes back to her understanding of her sexuality." So don't expect Emily to start any long term relationship with a boy.

Marlene also admitted that killing Maya was really hard for her. So hard that she even "might write some Emaya fan fiction, and just go off in a direction like, 'Well, what if...'...I think that would be really fun." It would! And maybe it would provide some comfort to Emaya fans to see where the relationship could have gone under Marlene's creative direction.

Also comforting should be the fact that Marlene found killing Maya really "agonizing." And it wasn't a random choice. "I feel like it was really important for our story," she explained. "People will see in Season 3 that it really invigorates the drama and the mystery of the show having done that."
