Yesterday (August 9), we showed you the first sneak peek photo from the Pretty Little Liars Season 3 summer finale (Season 3, Episode 12: “The Lady Killer”), which shows Hanna (Ashley Benson) crying with police tape in the foreground, while Aria (Lucy Hale) and Spencer (Troian Bellisario) hold her and look shocked.

We speculated about if this meant someone close to Hanna might die. While that's certainly still a possibility, some of our readers very cleverly pointed out that Hanna's hair is longer in the photo than she's been wearing it recently. It's also worth noting that Aria's hair looks darker than its current highlighted state.

So, what does that mean? Here are three situations we could see:

It's a flashback. This seems like the most obvious solution, but what would it be a flashback to? The girls aren't wearing what they were wearing when Maya (Bianca Lawson) and Ali (Sasha Pieterse) were found. It can't be related to Ali's initial disappearance, because it's not that much of a flashback — Aria doesn't have pink hair, and Hanna isn't in "hefty Hanna" mode. Did something else dramatic happen that would cause this kind of reaction?

It's a flashforward. On the other hand, maybe this is actually a flashforward, or a lot of time passes between the most recent episodes and the finale. It's a little hard to tell exactly how long Hanna' hair is in the picture, but it doesn't look as long as it was for most of the first two seasons.

It's just an odd photo. Maybe we're reading too much into this. It's a dark scene, so it's hard to tell exactly what color Aria's hair is, and it's possible that the angle of Hanna's head makes her hair look longer than it is. After all, in this sneak peek photo of Season 3, Episode 11: “Single Fright Female” her hair looks almost at her shoulder.
