In the synopsis of Pretty Little Liars Season 3, Episode 3: “Kingdom of the Blind” we learn that Spencer’s (Troian Bellisario) mom will take on Garrett (Yani Gellman) as a client, and Spencer is “sure that there is a reason forcing her mother to take on the case.” Also, Spencer will “stumble upon a larger Hastings secret.” What else have the Hastings been hiding?

We’ve long been curious of the Hastings family’s connection to Alison’s (Sasha Pieterse) murder. Spencer’s parents and sister always seem to be hiding something, and in Season 2, we saw hints that it’s usually something sinister.

One of the earliest examples was when Toby (Keegan Allen) found the broken piece of a field hockey stick buried in the Hastings yard in Season 2, Episode 7: “Surface Tension.” Peter Hastings told Toby to forget about it, but of course Toby told Spencer. Mr. Hastings burned the stick, and then accused Spencer of being the one who buried it. We suspect that the bloody stick belonged to Melissa (Torrey DeVitto), who may have been seriously involved in Ali’s murder.

Peter was also the executor of Alison and Jason’s (Drew Van Acker) grandmother’s will. He was asked to remove Jason from the will, presumably because they discovered that Jason was Mr. Hastings’ son. But once Alison died, Peter made sure that Jason was put back on the grandmother’s will, as the only surviving grandchild.

We have lingering questions about all of the above and more. Peter often comes off as protective of Melissa. First, there’s the hockey stick. Then, towards the end of Season 2, he revealed to Spencer that he and Mrs. Hastings had hired a private detective to keep tabs on Melissa. Does Peter know something about Melissa’s involvement with murdering Ali that night?

Getting back to the upcoming Season 3 episode, we’re wondering if Mrs. Hastings takes on Garrett’s case as a way to find out more about Melissa’s connection to Ali’s murder. She can ask him more about Page 5 of Ali’s autopsy report, and hopefully get him to talk about Melissa, since we know they’re having their own affair. Mrs. Hastings may even be trying to protect Melissa through protecting Garrett.
