The Pretty Little Liars writers are weaving a complicated — and painful — tale full of lies and betrayals, where every thread seems to be connected with at least three others.
We were thrilled to learn that this season we'll see a flashback between Toby (Keegan Allen) and Alison (Sasha Pieterse) set during Toby's time in juvie (where he was sent when he took the fall for blinding Jenna (Tammin Sursok]). This scene is supposed to give us more insight into the extent to which Toby "hated [the Liars] and wanted to make them pay," and we can't wait to dig further into his past.
Now, the rational thing to do would be to sit tight and wait for the flashback to find out what happens. But you know us — we can't do that. So we've come up with some theories about what could happen in that anticipated scene.
1. Alison mocks or threatens him. We know Toby was blackmailed into taking the fall for the Liars, and that alone would be motivation to hate them. Perhaps this scene is simply Ali coming to reinforce her threat or otherwise mock Toby. That could give us insight into the depth of his hatred, as well as what his time at juvie was like.
2. Ali blames the Liars — or Spencer specifically. Of course, this is Ali we're talking about, and so we suspect things might not be that simple. What if Ali manages to convince Toby that one of the other Liars was actually the ringleader behind Jenna’s accident? We know she told Jason (Drew Van Acker) that Spencer (Troian Bellisario) drove it all. Perhaps she told Toby the same thing. That would explain why he appears to be so callous when it comes to hurting Spence, and why he's going to such lengths to hurt the Liars even though Ali is the one primarily responsible for ruining his life.
3. Ali recruits him for the "A" team. Okay, this one is more out there, but let us explain. A big fan theory, and one that we like, is that Ali is actually behind the "A" team. What if she not only convinces Toby that the Liars were to blame for his hardships, but also pushed him to join the "A" team as a way to seek revenge? Hey, crazier things have happened in Rosewood...
